Product Description
Knitterbug Shawl is a very simple pattern using a few standard knitting elements: garter stitch, yarn-over increases, eyelets, and an I-cord edging. If you are familiar with these elements you will whiz through this pattern. If you are not familiar with any of these, you will be happy to learn these simple and commonly used techniques, and end up with a lovely, functional shawl or scarf.
I pulled yarn from deep in my stash. It is Queensland Haze, a corn viscose/cotton variegated yarn (DK/Light Worsted). It was being closed out when I first discovered it years ago. Any yarn will do, but I recommend a variegated yarn from your stash. Use whatever size needle is recommended for your yarn weight. The finished size is up to you.
I have added a second option to the pattern with a contrasting color eyelet row. There are new instructions for using a MC and CC below.

What is Being Made
The Knitterbug Shawl is a versatile knitted accessory designed as a beginner-friendly pattern that can be crafted as either a functional shawl or scarf. The finished size is customizable based on crafter preference, allowing for flexibility in the final dimensions. This pattern celebrates the tradition of knitting knowledge passed down through generations of teachers and crafters.
Techniques Used
This beginner-level pattern incorporates several fundamental knitting techniques that are essential to developing core skills:
- Garter stitch – the foundational stitch that forms the main body of the shawl, created by knitting every row
- Yarn-over increases – a decorative and functional technique used to expand stitches and create shaping throughout the pattern
- I-cord edging – a finished edge treatment that adds structure and a polished appearance to the completed shawl
Stitches Used
The pattern relies primarily on garter stitch as the dominant stitch throughout the project. Yarn-overs are incorporated as increases to shape the shawl. The I-cord technique is used to create a neat, finished edging that frames the completed piece.
Materials
This pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn. The designer recommends using any yarn from your stash, with particular suggestion for variegated yarn to add visual interest to the finished shawl. The sample shown features Berroco Summer Sesame, a blend of 47% cotton and 44% manufactured fibers. Crafters should use whatever needle size is recommended for their chosen yarn weight, following standard yarn weight guidelines for proper gauge and fabric drape.
Difficulty Level
Classified as a beginner pattern, the Knitterbug Shawl is accessible to knitters who are familiar with basic stitches and techniques. Those already comfortable with garter stitch, yarn-over increases, and I-cord edging will complete the pattern quickly. Beginners unfamiliar with these techniques will find this pattern an excellent introduction to commonly used knitting methods, resulting in a lovely, functional finished garment.
