Product Description

Two large multicoloured flowers that hide a pretty and very cheerful bag where the chlidren's treasures can be hidden. The crochet technique used ensures that no fabric is required to liner the bag inside. The model explained is of medium size but the bag can be enlarged or reduced according to your wishes. It was made of combed cotton but you can also use wool or acrylic. The model proposed here is multicoloured because it is designed for children but it can very well be made with a single colour or less bright colours for teenagers. The bag and cord are really easy to make. The PDF tutorial includes a main diagram and 7 detail diagrams as well as a step-by-step explanation with 53 photos.

Kids Handbag "Rainbow Flower" by OITo Crochet

What is Being Made

The Rainbow Flower is a colorful crochet handbag designed specifically for children. This intermediate-level project creates a functional accessory featuring a circular construction with a rainbow color scheme and floral design elements. The finished handbag measures approximately 18 cm in diameter and extends to 80 cm in total length, making it an appropriately sized bag for young users.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs several foundational and intermediate crochet techniques to create texture and structure. The bag begins with an adjustable ring (also called a magic circle), which allows for a seamless center start. The construction utilizes post stitches to create dimensional texture and visual interest throughout the design. Specifically, the pattern incorporates Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet stitches, which are worked around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops. These post stitch variations add depth and create the relief effects that enhance the flower motif. Color changes are incorporated throughout the project to achieve the rainbow effect, requiring the crocheter to manage multiple yarn colors strategically.

Stitches Used

The Rainbow Flower handbag utilizes the following crochet stitches:

  • Chain (Chaînette): Foundation and structural stitch
  • Slip Stitch (Maille coulée): Used for joining rounds and finishing
  • Single Crochet (Maille serrée): Basic tight stitch for structure
  • Front Post Single Crochet (Maille serrée relief avant): Creates textured relief
  • Half Double Crochet (Demi-brides): Medium-height stitch for body sections
  • Front Post Half Double Crochet (Demi-brides relief avant): Textured variation
  • Double Crochet (Bride): Taller stitch for drape and flow
  • Front Post Double Crochet (Bride relief avant): Creates dimensional flower petals and details
  • Back Post Double Crochet (Bride relief arrière): Adds depth to the back of the design

Materials and Tools

This project is worked with combed cotton yarn in weights of 3-ply and 4-ply, making it ideal for creating a lightweight, breathable handbag suitable for children. Combed cotton provides a smooth finish and durability for a frequently-used accessory. The pattern requires a crochet hook sized 4 (EU) or 6 (USA), which pairs appropriately with the specified yarn weights to achieve proper fabric density and drape.

Pattern Structure

The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format and includes both written instructions and crochet diagrams. The circular construction begins with stitch counts that increase in increments: 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 stitches, allowing the crocheter to expand the circular base systematically. The pattern includes helpful resources for reference, such as stitch tutorials, color-changing techniques, and instructions for reading crochet diagrams, making it accessible for intermediate-level crocheters who may need to refresh their skills on specific techniques.
