Product Description

'Khel' is hindi for 'Play' as in Kids love to play. This design is a result of my playing with this new technique for knitting set-in sleeves.

I have probably tried all the different approaches to knitting a sweater seamlessly. So naturally when I came across the contiguous sleeve method developed by Susie Meyers I had to try it. This method allows you to knit a sleeve seamlessly together with the body and is very close to set in sleeve shaping. This is my first published attempt at encouraging more knitters to try out the method. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Sample shown is a short-sleeved version knit using three colors of Lion Brand Cotton-Ease from my stash. The sweater has approx. 4”(10cm) ease worked into the calculations.

Highlights of the design:

  • Knit from top-down
  • Completely seamless and knit in one-piece
  • Contiguous set-in sleeve method worked at the same time as neck shaping
  • Simultaneous cast on using two methods

Project Overview

The Khel (Child) Contiguous Cardigan is a seamless knit cardigan designed for children, featuring an innovative construction method that eliminates the need for traditional sleeve seaming. This intermediate-level knitting project showcases the contiguous sleeve technique, a method that allows knitters to join sleeves directly to the body during the knitting process rather than seaming them afterward. The designer, Shweta Shankar Khatri, developed this pattern to introduce more knitters to this advanced construction approach, which produces a polished, professional finish with minimal finishing work.

Construction and Techniques

Contiguous Sleeve Method: The defining feature of this cardigan is its use of the contiguous sleeve construction technique developed by Susie Meyers. This seamless approach mirrors traditional set-in sleeve shaping but integrates the sleeve cap directly into the body during knitting, eliminating the need for seaming. This method results in a smooth transition from body to sleeve with no visible seams at the armhole.

Seamless Construction: By employing the contiguous sleeve method, the entire cardigan is knit as one continuous piece, reducing finishing time and creating a more durable garment. The seamless design is particularly beneficial for children's wear, as it eliminates uncomfortable seams that can irritate sensitive skin.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

While the pattern employs standard knitting stitches typical of cardigan construction, the primary focus is on the advanced shaping techniques required for the contiguous sleeve method. Knitters will work with set-in sleeve shaping principles while maintaining continuity throughout the project, requiring intermediate-level understanding of increases, decreases, and armhole shaping.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn Weight: This pattern is designed for worsted-weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that provides good stitch definition and durability for children's garments.

Yarn Fiber: The sample shown was knit using Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, a cotton-blend yarn that offers breathability and easy care—ideal qualities for children's clothing. Cotton-Ease combines cotton with acrylic for durability and washability.

Color Options: The pattern accommodates multiple approaches to colorwork. The sample pictured uses three colors of Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, demonstrating the potential for color blocking or striped effects. Knitters have the flexibility to create the cardigan in a single solid color or incorporate multiple colors in sequences or patterns of their choice, allowing for personalized design variations.

Sizing and Sample

The sample garment shown in the pattern was knit in size 4T, making this an appropriate project for toddlers and young children. The pattern includes multiple sizes to accommodate different age ranges and measurements.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting techniques and are ready to tackle more advanced construction methods. The contiguous sleeve technique requires careful attention to shaping and stitch manipulation, but the detailed instructions provided in this 26-page pattern guide knitters through each step of the process.

Pattern Format

The Khel (Child) Contiguous Cardigan is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to complete instructions, schematics, and guidance for this seamless cardigan project.
