Product Description
This beautiful shawlette is worked from the center of the back neck, top down, increasing to the bottom edge. The tonal colors create a wonderful transition adding to the beauty of the design. The colors of the yarn remind me of the super bloom I witnessed this year at Carrizo Plain National Monument. The colors were so gorgeous they stay with me forever. Nature in its best!
K848 – Carrizo Plain Shawlette by Nazanin Fard
Project Overview
The Carrizo Plain is an elegant knitted shawlette designed for intermediate-level knitters. This top-down shawlette is worked from the center of the back neck, increasing progressively toward the bottom edge. The finished piece features a wingspan of 43 inches (109 cm) and a depth at center back of 16½ inches (42 cm), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece.
Design and Construction
This shawlette showcases a beautiful lace border pattern that creates an intricate visual appeal. The tonal gradient colorway of the yarn adds wonderful depth and dimension to the design, with colors transitioning smoothly throughout the piece. The top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the shawlette as it grows and customize the final length if desired.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details
The Carrizo Plain features a sophisticated lace border worked over a multiple of 15 stitches. The 14-row repeat pattern combines several essential knitting techniques to create the delicate, openwork design:
- Yarn overs (yo) – Used throughout to create the characteristic eyelets and lace motifs that define the shawlette's aesthetic
- Knit two together (k2tog) – A right-leaning decrease that works in tandem with yarn overs to maintain stitch count while shaping the lace
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – A left-leaning decrease that balances the k2tog decreases and creates symmetrical lace patterns
- Purl rows – All wrong-side rows are purled, creating a smooth base for the lace pattern to stand out
The pattern begins with rows featuring multiple yarn overs and decreases clustered together, creating bold lace motifs. As the repeat progresses through rows 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, the spacing of the yarn overs and decreases shifts, creating a flowing, organic appearance. Rows 13 and 14 provide a rest from the lace pattern with a purl row followed by a knit row before the 14-row sequence repeats.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Carrizo Plain is designed to be worked in gradient sock yarn with a super fine (fingering) weight. The recommended yarn is 75% superwash wool blended with 25% nylon, providing both softness and durability. The project requires 385 yards (352 meters) of yarn per 100 grams, making this a relatively yarn-efficient design. The superwash wool content ensures easy care, while the nylon blend adds strength and elasticity, helping the finished shawlette maintain its shape and drape beautifully.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Carrizo Plain is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with lace patterns. Familiarity with yarn overs, decreases, and reading stitch patterns is essential for success with this design.
