Product Description
Named in honor of the lace addict at my knit meeting, Juliane. She is a brilliant person to talk about early design ideas. This shawl is a product of such an inspiration talk. Juliane likes to mix different techniques and loves to add beads to pretty much everything. The overall look of the shawl is a faroes style with a cabled and beaded centre spine and a nature inspired lace in the sides and borders. The lace is a straight forward lace, worked only on the right side. The cables are intuitive to work and crossing appears only on the right side.

Juliane Shawl by Atalante
What is Being Made
Juliane is an advanced knitting pattern for a laceweight shawl designed by Atalante and named in honor of a fellow knitter who inspired the design. This shawl combines multiple techniques and embellishments to create a sophisticated, wearable accessory. Two finished size options are available: a smaller version measuring 160 cm x 60 cm (63 inches x 24 inches) and a larger version measuring 190 cm x 70 cm (75 inches x 27 inches).
Design and Structure
The Juliane shawl features a Faroese-style construction with a distinctive cabled and beaded center spine that runs the length of the garment. This central spine provides both structural interest and visual focus. The sides and borders showcase nature-inspired lace patterns that contrast beautifully with the textured center. The overall design balances geometric cable work with organic lace motifs, creating a piece that appeals to knitters who enjoy mixing different techniques within a single project.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced pattern incorporates several key techniques that work together to create the finished design:
- Cable Knitting: The center spine features intuitive cable crossings that appear only on the right side of the work, simplifying the knitting process while maintaining visual impact.
- Lace Knitting: Straightforward lace patterns are worked exclusively on the right side, making the lace sections accessible despite the advanced overall difficulty rating. The lace motifs draw inspiration from natural forms and elements.
- Beading: Beads are incorporated throughout the design, particularly in the center spine and lace sections. This embellishment adds dimension and catches light, making the shawl suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
- Stockinette Stitch: Used as the base gauge reference for the pattern.
Materials and Tools
The Juliane shawl is worked in laceweight yarn, requiring 650 meters (710 yards) for the small size or 775 meters (850 yards) for the large size. Knitters will need 3.5 mm (US 4) needles, a tapestry needle for finishing, 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats, and approximately 169 beads for embellishment throughout the design.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 33 rows over a 10 cm (4 inch) square in stockinette stitch. However, the pattern notes that gauge is not critical to the success of the project, though variations in gauge will affect both the finished dimensions and yardage requirements. This flexibility allows knitters to adapt the pattern to their preferred yarn and needle combination while maintaining the essential design elements.
