Product Description

One of the ladies in my knitting group wanted to knit a simple shawl, and after looking at several patterns we decided a basic asymmetric shawl would be the best option. So, I wrote out a pattern for her. Of course, I couldn’t resist adding a bit of embellishment also, so I added a couple of variations.

This shawl can be made with pretty much any weight of yarn, and any size needle, depending on the type of fabric, and size shawl you want to end up with. Different weights of yarn will give you a different finished size. The thicker your yarn, the larger your shawl.

The purple at the top was done using Jilly & Kiddles Sock Yarn in Monkshood and a US size 8 needle.

The green at the bottom left was done using Fish Belly Fiber Works light fingering in Lagoon and a U.S. size 7 needle.

And the yellow below was done using Araucania Huasco DK and a U.S. size 9 needle.

What is Being Made

Joanie's Shawl is a beginner-friendly asymmetric shawl pattern designed by Helen Silva for knitters seeking a simple yet elegant accessory. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a versatile base design that can be customized through yarn selection and embellishment variations, making it suitable for knitters of various experience levels who want to create a finished shawl with visual interest and personal flair.

Design and Variations

The pattern includes two variations of the base asymmetric shawl design, allowing knitters to choose their preferred level of embellishment. The designer has demonstrated the pattern's adaptability by creating multiple samples using different yarn weights and needle sizes, showcasing how yarn choice directly impacts the final dimensions and drape of the completed shawl.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental shawl construction techniques centered around the asymmetric shawl structure. The asymmetric design is an ideal approach for beginner knitters as it builds confidence through straightforward increases and decreases while producing a sophisticated finished garment. The pattern demonstrates how basic knitting fundamentals can be applied to create professional-looking results.

Yarn Weight Options

Joanie's Shawl accommodates multiple yarn weights, including 3-ply, 4-ply, and DK (double knit) weight yarns. The pattern's flexibility with yarn weight means that knitters can achieve different finished shawl sizes depending on their yarn selection—thicker yarns produce larger shawls, while lighter yarns create more delicate versions. This adaptability makes the pattern suitable for various stash-busting projects and personal preferences.

Materials and Needle Specifications

The pattern works with a range of needle sizes corresponding to the chosen yarn weight. The designer's samples demonstrate successful results using U.S. size 7 and U.S. size 8 needles with different yarn types. Specific yarn examples shown include Jilly & Kiddles Sock Yarn in the colorway Monkshood, Fish Belly Fiber Works light fingering in Lagoon, and Araucania Huasco DK, illustrating the pattern's compatibility with both specialty and standard yarn sources.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner pattern, Joanie's Shawl provides an accessible entry point into shawl knitting. The asymmetric construction and straightforward approach make this pattern ideal for knitters developing their skills while still delivering a polished, wearable finished object that demonstrates professional design principles.
