Product Description

Jargon is a beginner-friendly cowl comprised of knits and purls only, but looks much more complex. Just like words, its whole is more than the sum of its parts.

Finished Size: 36” around, 7.5” tall Yarn: Supercraftygirl Oasis DK, 75% Superwash Merino/25% nylon, 225 yards/100 grams (Sample knit in Semantics). Sample used 200 yards.

Needles: 24” circular needles, size 5 US (3.75 mm), or size to obtain gauge

Gauge: 20 stitches/28 rows per 4” in blocked stockinette, knit in the round. Gauge is not critical with this item, but will affect drape and amount of yarn used.

Jargon Cowl by Corrine Walcher

What is Being Made

The Jargon Cowl is a knitted neck accessory designed by Corrine Walcher. This cowl is a circular, tube-shaped garment that measures 36 inches around and 7.5 inches tall when finished. Despite its appearance of complexity, the design uses only fundamental knitting techniques, making it accessible to knitters with intermediate skill levels who want to create a visually sophisticated piece.

Design Concept

The Jargon Cowl demonstrates how simple knitting elements combine to create intricate visual effects. The pattern uses only knits and purls—the two most basic knitting stitches—yet the arrangement of these stitches produces a textured appearance that looks far more advanced than the techniques required. This interplay between simplicity and perceived complexity is reflected in the cowl's name, drawing a parallel to how individual words combine to form meaningful language.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters:

  • Knit stitch (K): The basic stitch that forms the foundation of most knitted fabrics
  • Purl stitch (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and visual interest
  • Working in the round: The cowl is constructed using circular needles to create a seamless tube, with a stitch marker placed at the beginning of each round to track progress
  • Ribbing: The initial three rounds establish a knit 3, purl 3 ribbed pattern that provides elasticity and helps the cowl maintain its shape
  • Chart reading: The pattern includes a knitting chart that is repeated 17 times throughout the body of the cowl, allowing the textured pattern to develop across the full circumference

Yarn and Materials

The sample cowl was knitted using Supercraftygirl Oasis DK yarn in the colorway Semantics. This yarn is composed of 75% Superwash Merino wool and 25% nylon, providing both softness and durability. The yarn weight is DK (double knitting), which is a lightweight to medium-weight yarn ideal for creating garments with good drape and fluid movement. The full skein contains 225 yards per 100 grams, though the sample cowl required only 200 yards of yarn, leaving some yardage remaining.

Needles and Gauge

The Jargon Cowl is worked on 24-inch circular needles in size 5 US (3.75 mm), or a size that achieves the specified gauge. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when measured in blocked stockinette stitch and worked in the round. While gauge is noted as not critical for this particular item, achieving proper gauge will affect both the drape of the finished cowl and the total amount of yarn consumed during knitting.

Pattern Construction

The cowl begins with casting on 204 stitches and joining them to work in the round. A stitch marker is placed at the beginning of the round to mark the starting point for each new round. The first three rounds establish the pattern with a knit 3, purl 3 repeat that continues around the entire circumference. Following these foundation rounds, knitters work from either a chart or written instructions, repeating the main pattern 17 times to build the full height and textured appearance of the cowl. This structured approach makes the pattern straightforward to follow while producing visually striking results.
