Product Description
A vest inspired by Japan, with only one large armhole, to drape, fold and fasten as you please with a shawl pin or two. You can also use the Japanese Vest as a scarf if you like. The all over reversible dropped stitch pattern is by Lynne Barr. The vest is knitted in one piece, in the beautiful Huldra kamgarn from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, with double hem bands all around.
Yarn: Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, Huldra kamgarn (100% Mondevideo Wool, 200 g cone, 850 m/929 yds).
Gauge: 28 stitches and 36 rows in st st using 3 mm/US 2.5 needle measures 10 cm/4” square after blocking.
Notes: The vest is seamless and worked in one piece with one large armhole. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches. The side double band hem is picked up and worked at the end with 2 circular needles held parallel. If you prefer, add for instance 3 stitches in garter stitch in each end instead, or skip the side double band.

What Is Being Made
The Japanese Vest is a versatile, draped garment inspired by Japanese design principles. This knitted vest features a single large armhole that allows for flexible styling—the wearer can drape, fold, and fasten the fabric as desired using shawl pins or other closures. The design is intentionally multifunctional; it can be worn as a traditional vest or repurposed as a scarf, making it a highly adaptable addition to any wardrobe. The vest is available in four sizes to fit XS/S through 4XL/5XL, with finished lengths ranging from 102 cm (40.25") to 168 cm (66.25").
Construction and Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project is constructed in one continuous piece, which streamlines the building process and creates a cohesive garment. The vest features double hem bands worked all around the perimeter, providing a polished, finished edge and added structure. The garment is designed with intentional ease built in, ranging from +6 to +20 cm (2.25 to 7.75"), allowing for comfortable layering and the relaxed drape characteristic of the Japanese-inspired silhouette.
Stitch Pattern
The Japanese Vest showcases an all-over reversible dropped stitch pattern credited to designer Lynne Barr. This reversible stitch pattern adds visual interest and texture to both sides of the fabric, making the vest equally attractive whether worn with the pattern facing outward or inward. The dropped stitch technique creates an open, airy quality while maintaining structural integrity—a hallmark of sophisticated knitwear design.
Yarn and Materials
The sample vest is knitted in Huldra kamgarn from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, a premium Norwegian yarn mill. This yarn is composed of 100% Montevideo Wool and comes in 200 g cones with 850 meters (929 yards) per cone. The sample photographed is worked in the colorway Sjøgrønn (Sea Green). The yarn weight is 4-ply, providing excellent stitch definition for the reversible dropped stitch pattern while remaining lightweight enough for the draped aesthetic. The natural wool fiber offers warmth, elasticity, and the subtle sheen characteristic of quality kamgarn yarns.
Finished Measurements

Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore stitch pattern work and garment construction. The one-piece construction and reversible dropped stitch pattern require attention to detail and understanding of stitch mechanics, but the straightforward shaping makes it accessible to experienced beginners advancing their craft.
