What is Being Made

Jane's Gloves are customizable fingerless gloves designed with extended finger coverage. Created to address arthritis-related hand discomfort, these gloves feature long fingers that extend over the middle joints while leaving the palm and back of the hand open. The design is fully adaptable—knitters can adjust the wrist ribbing length, finger length, and thumb proportions to suit individual needs, or remove the fingers entirely for traditional fingerless gloves by substituting ribbing at the finger start point.

Knitting Techniques Used

Jane's Gloves are worked in the round using circular knitting methods, which creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for fitted hand garments. The pattern employs ribbing at the wrist to provide elasticity and a secure fit around the hand. Double-ended needles are required for this project—short double-ended needles are specifically recommended to avoid awkward handling during the small-circumference circular knitting process. The in-the-round construction eliminates the need for seaming and ensures a smooth, comfortable finish against the skin.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch structure utilizes ribbing, which alternates knit and purl stitches in vertical columns. This ribbed pattern appears at the wrist and can be incorporated where fingers would begin if the knitter chooses to eliminate finger sections. Ribbing provides both functional stretch and a polished aesthetic finish. The remainder of the glove is worked in stockinette stitch (knit stitches in the round), creating a smooth, flat fabric suitable for a close-fitting garment.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Jane's Gloves are worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that produces fairly thin, refined fabric—appropriate for the design's goal of creating lightweight gloves that don't add bulk to arthritic hands. Short double-ended needles in an appropriate size for DK yarn are essential to the construction method. The DK weight ensures the finished gloves maintain a delicate drape while still providing warmth and structure.
