Jamie the Shetland Puffin is an advanced knitting pattern for a three-dimensional stuffed toy puffin designed by Browneyedbabs. The finished puffin stands approximately 11 inches tall, making it a substantial handmade toy project suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and rewarding creation.
This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern employs double point needles (dpns) to create the toy's various components in the round, which is a standard technique for constructing three-dimensional knitted toys and amigurumi-style projects. Working in the round with dpns allows for seamless construction of cylindrical and spherical forms that make up the puffin's body, head, and other features.
The pattern utilizes a comprehensive range of intermediate to advanced knitting stitches and techniques:
The pattern sample is worked in KnitPicks Swish DK, a 100% merino wool yarn in the DK (double knit) weight category. This yarn is supplied in 123-yard balls weighing 50 grams each. The specified gauge is 24 stitches and 36 rows per 4-inch square in stockinette stitch, which should be verified before beginning the project to ensure the finished puffin achieves the intended 11-inch height.
Classified as an advanced difficulty pattern, Jamie the Shetland Puffin is designed for experienced knitters comfortable with complex shaping, multiple decreases and increases, and three-dimensional construction. The pattern includes optional charts for the head and body sections (found on pages 6 to 9 of the downloadable PDF), offering visual guidance for those who prefer chart-based instructions alongside written directions. The comprehensive abbreviations list provided ensures knitters have clear reference material throughout the project.
