What Is Being Made

The Jacobia Hat is a squared knit hat designed to fit snugly around the head. This beginner-friendly design features a structured, geometric silhouette created through flat knitting and seaming techniques. The finished hat measures 10" by 7.5" and is sized to fit a 23" head circumference, making it a versatile accessory for various head sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The hat is knitted flat rather than in the round, meaning you work back and forth on straight needles to create a rectangular fabric. After the flat knitting is complete, the piece is seamed together using a tapestry needle to join the cast-on and bind-off edges, then one end is closed to form the finished hat shape. This flat-and-seam construction method is an excellent introduction to garment assembly for newer knitters.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Jacobia Hat features a two-row repeating pattern that combines knit and purl stitches with a slip stitch technique. The pattern sequence is as follows:

  • Row 1 (Wrong Side): Knit 2 stitches, then repeat the sequence of purl 1 and knit 4 stitches across, ending with purl 1 and knit 2.
  • Row 2 (Right Side): Knit 2 stitches, then repeat the sequence of slipping one stitch purlwise with yarn held in back and knitting 4 stitches across, ending with a slip stitch and knit 2.

The slip stitch worked with yarn in back creates a subtle texture and visual interest on the right side of the fabric. This two-row pattern is repeated until the body reaches 19 inches in length. The pattern uses the long tail cast on method for the initial 20 stitches and finishes with a bind-off worked in pattern to maintain consistency with the stitch design.

Materials and Gauge

The Jacobia Hat is designed to be knitted with super bulky yarn, requiring only 90 yards total—making it a quick project. The sample shown was knit in Malabrigo Rasta in the colorway Ravelry Red. You will need a US 13 (9mm) needle and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 stitches over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the hat to fit properly at the intended 23-inch head circumference. The super bulky yarn weight and larger needle size allow for quick knitting, making this an ideal project for beginners or anyone seeking a fast, satisfying make.
