Jacket & Shorts with Bib Set for 16-22 Inch Dolls, Newborn, and 0-3 Month Babies
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern by Claire Topping creates a complete three-piece playsuitset consisting of a knitted jacket, matching shorts, and a coordinating bib. The pattern is designed to fit multiple sizes: 16-18 inch dolls (premature or small newborn babies), 19-20 inch dolls (newborn babies), and 21-22 inch dolls (0-3 month babies). This versatility makes it an ideal project for creating coordinated outfits across different doll and baby sizes.
Techniques Used
The pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to construct the garments. Wrap and turn (W&T) shaping is utilized to create tailored garment construction, allowing for custom fit across the different size ranges. The pattern incorporates ribbed edging for a professional finish on cuffs, waistbands, and necklines. Shirring elastic is incorporated into the design, likely used in the shorts waistband to provide elasticity and ensure proper fit across the size range. Button bands are featured on the jacket, with seven buttons serving as the primary closures, plus an additional three buttons available for optional decoration on coordinating accessories such as shoes and hats.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl (P) – used in combination with knit stitches
- 1x1 Rib (K1, P1 rib) – creates elastic edging on cuffs, waistbands, and necklines
- Stockinette stitch (St-st) – the main fabric structure providing a smooth, classic appearance
- Wrap and Turn (W&T) – a shaping technique for custom fit
Materials and Tools
The pattern uses 4-ply yarn (also known as light worsted weight in US terminology or sport weight), available in both main color and contrast color options. Yarn quantities vary by size: smaller dolls (16-18 inches) require 100g main color and 100g contrast color doubled; medium dolls (19-20 inches) need 150g main color and 100g contrast color doubled; and larger dolls and babies (21-22 inches) also require 150g main color and 100g contrast color doubled.
Needle sizes are tailored to each size option. The 21-22 inch doll/0-3 month baby size uses 4mm needles (UK 8, US 6). The 19-20 inch doll/newborn size uses 3.75mm needles (UK 9, US 5) and 3mm needles (UK 11, US 3 equivalent). The 16-18 inch doll/premature baby size uses 3.25mm needles (UK 10, US 3) and 2.75mm needles (UK 12, US 2). Additional tools include a cable needle for any cable work and 3mm shirring elastic for waistband construction. Seven buttons are required for the jacket closures, with optional additional buttons available for decorative purposes on coordinating pieces.
