Product Description

I've been wanting to create Jack for years - so excited he's finally here!

You may know my Jackie Lumber crochet pattern - Jack is her counterpart!

Jack was intended to be Jackie's male counterpart and thus uses CYC standard men's measurements. BUT ... he's actually a unisex piece. :-)

Jack is worked with 4-6" positive ease, depending on size. Sizes are: S (M, L, 1X, 2X) / 36 (40, 44, 48, 52)" Chest

Garment is worked with two colors in intarsia method with yarn held double.

I strive for designs which are intuitive, fun and engaging so that you could relax and enjoy the process of creating your own masterpiece!

Jack Lumber Crochet Cardigan by Skeinsnsticks Designs

What is Being Made

Jack Lumber is a crochet cardigan that reimagines the classic buffalo plaid button-down shirt in yarn form. This intermediate-level design features a structured, tailored fit with a button-front closure, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for both casual and styled wear. The cardigan is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2X, with finished chest measurements of 40" to 58" and positive ease built into the pattern for comfortable wear.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This cardigan is constructed using foundational crochet techniques combined with specialized stitches to achieve its structured appearance. The pattern employs Foundation Half Double Crochet (fhdc), which creates a stable base row without requiring a separate chain foundation. This technique is particularly useful for establishing even edges and consistent stitch tension from the start of the project.

The main fabric is worked in a primary stitch pattern that achieves a gauge of 17 stitches and 11 rows over 4 inches when blocked. The cardigan incorporates Herringbone Half Double Crochet two together (hbhdc2tog), a specialized decrease stitch that creates a refined, diagonal texture while reducing stitches for shaping. This stitch is essential for creating the tailored shaping at the waist, armholes, and neckline that gives the cardigan its polished, structured silhouette.

Stitches Used

  • Foundation Half Double Crochet (fhdc)
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc)
  • Herringbone Half Double Crochet two together (hbhdc2tog)
  • Chain stitch (ch)

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Jack Lumber is designed to be worked with MillaMia Sweden Naturally Soft Merino, a premium yarn composed of 100% Virgin Wool. This yarn is classified as CYCA #2/Sport weight, offering a balance between drape and structure ideal for a fitted cardigan. Each ball contains 136 yards (125 meters) and weighs 1.7 ounces (50 grams).

The cardigan is worked in a two-color buffalo plaid pattern using #108 Lipstick Red and #100 Pitch Black. Yarn requirements vary by size: the Small size requires 28 balls total (12 red, 16 black), while the 2X size requires 42 balls total (19 red, 23 black). The pattern is worked on a Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, with adjustments recommended based on individual gauge.

Notions and Finishing Materials

Completing the cardigan requires several finishing notions. The pattern calls for 12 buttons measuring ¾" (19mm) for the main front closure and 2 buttons measuring ½" (13mm), likely for cuff or pocket details. Additional supplies include 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and thread for securely attaching buttons to the finished garment.

Difficulty Level and Blocking

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle structured garment construction. The pattern requires understanding of shaping techniques, color work management, and proper blocking procedures. The finished cardigan should be blocked to achieve the correct gauge and to even out the buffalo plaid pattern, ensuring the garment drapes properly and maintains its intended finished measurements.
