Into the Vortex Shawl by Kath Andrews
What is Being Made
Into the Vortex is a wrap-style shawl designed by Kath Andrews featuring a distinctive vortex shape. This knitted shawl is available in two sizes and can be created using either 4 ply or DK weight yarn, offering flexibility for different yarn preferences and stash management. The shawl showcases a dynamic spiral construction that creates visual movement and interest.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern offers multiple yarn weight options to suit different preferences:
- 4 ply version: Available in small (87 x 100 cm) and large (103 x 128 cm) sizes. The pattern calls for 1 skein of Yarn A and 2 skeins of Yarn B using Riverknits Chimera 4 ply, which is 100% British Bluefaced Leicester Wool at 195m per 50g.
- DK version: Creates a finished size of 100 x 106 cm. This version uses ½ skein of Yarn A and 1 skein of Yarn B with Riverknits Nene DK, also 100% British Bluefaced Leicester Wool at 400m per 100g. The DK version blocks with more curve on the cast-off edge and requires fewer rows than the 4 ply small size.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Into the Vortex incorporates several engaging knitting techniques that make it an intermediate-level project:
- Garter stitch: Forms the foundation of this shawl, creating a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges.
- Slip stitch patterns: Used to create visual interest and texture variations throughout the design.
- Stripes: The two-colour construction uses contrasting yarn colours to emphasize the vortex shape and directional movement.
- Eyelet lace: Delicate lace techniques are incorporated to add refinement and airiness to the shawl design.
