Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Sophia Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted children's sweater designed by Instarsia, featuring intarsia colorwork technique for personalization. The pattern uses a moniker chart system, allowing crafters to incorporate a child's name into the sweater design. This downloadable PDF pattern provides detailed instructions for creating a fitted pullover sweater with ribbed cuffs and waistband.
What Is Being Made
A children's pullover sweater with set-in armholes and crew neckline. The garment is constructed in pieces—back, front, and sleeves—that are knitted separately and then seamed together. The sweater features intarsia colorwork on the front, allowing for a personalized moniker (name) to be knitted into the design using the provided chart. The pattern includes multiple size options to accommodate different ages and measurements.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia colorwork: A technique for incorporating multiple colors into knitted fabric by using separate yarn lengths for each color section. This method creates a single-layer fabric with color changes that follow a chart pattern, ideal for adding names or motifs to the sweater front.
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture.
- Ribbed knit: Used for the cuffs, waistband, and neckline to create elastic, fitted edges that hold their shape.
- Armhole shaping: Decreases worked at the beginning of rows to create fitted armholes and proper sleeve cap placement.
- Seaming: The separately knitted pieces are joined together using backstitch or similar seaming techniques.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): The fundamental stitch creating the front loop of stockinette fabric.
- Purl (p): Used in ribbed sections and as part of stockinette stitch construction.
- Purl two together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape armholes and create fitted sections.
- 2x2 rib: An alternating knit-purl pattern (k2, p2) that creates the elastic ribbed sections at cuffs and waistband.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn suitable for children's garments. Knitters will need 2¾mm needles for the main body and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections. The pattern specifies working to a particular tension (gauge) to ensure proper fit across the multiple size options provided. Yarn amounts vary based on the selected size and should be calculated according to the specifications given in the full pattern.
Pattern Structure
The pattern provides instructions for the back piece, front piece with intarsia chart integration, and sleeve construction. The back is worked in stockinette stitch with ribbed waistband and armhole shaping. The front follows the same basic construction but includes the moniker chart worked into the stockinette section, allowing the child's name to be prominently featured. Row-by-row instructions detail when to decrease for armholes, how many rows to work between shaping points, and the exact stitch counts at each stage of construction.
