Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Robin Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique to incorporate a robin moniker chart into the garment. The pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted pullover sweater with ribbed cuffs and waistband, suitable for multiple sizes in the children's range.
Knitting Techniques Used
The primary construction method is stockinette stitch (st-st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for displaying intarsia colorwork. The sweater employs intarsia technique, a method of working with multiple colors by using separate yarn lengths or bobbins for each color section rather than carrying yarn across the back of the work. This technique produces clean, professional-looking colorwork without the bulk that stranded colorwork can create.
The pattern includes armhole shaping achieved through strategic decreases, and 2x2 ribbing at the cuffs and lower edge to provide elasticity and a finished appearance. The sweater is constructed in pieces (back, front, and sleeves) that are later assembled.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): Knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows to create the smooth fabric base for the intarsia design
- 2x2 ribbing: Alternating knit 2, purl 2 stitches to create stretchy, finished edges at the cuffs and waistband
- Decreases: Purl 2 together (p2tog) and single decreases at armholes and neckline for shaping
- Cast-on and bind-off: Standard techniques to begin and finish the garment pieces
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the intarsia robin chart clearly. The project requires 2¾mm needles for the main stockinette sections and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edgings, with the smaller needles creating tighter tension for the elastic ribbing.
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension and using the recommended yarn weight. The intarsia technique requires separate yarn lengths or bobbins for each color section of the robin design to maintain clean color transitions without carrying yarn across the back of the work.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the skills required to execute intarsia colorwork successfully while managing the shaping and construction of a fitted children's garment. Knitters should be comfortable with basic shaping techniques, tension management, and the intarsia method before attempting this design.
