Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Kelsey Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork. The design incorporates a personalized moniker chart, allowing crafters to customize the garment with a child's name or initials using the intarsia technique. The pattern is graded across multiple sizes to accommodate different ages and measurements.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's pullover sweater with ribbed cuffs and waistband. The garment features intarsia colorwork on the front, which displays a moniker or name chart. The sweater is constructed with separate back and front pieces, shaped armholes, and finished with ribbed detailing at the neckline and cuffs.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique, used to incorporate the personalized moniker chart into the front of the sweater. Intarsia involves working with separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections, creating a smooth, single-layer fabric without the floats characteristic of stranded colorwork.
- Shaping: Strategic decreases are worked at the armholes and other shaping points to create a fitted silhouette. Decreases are made using p2tog (purl two together) and other decrease methods.
- Ribbed Edgings: 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) is used for cuffs and waistband, providing elasticity and a finished appearance.
- Stocking Stitch (St-st): The main fabric stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The primary stitch for creating the main fabric
- Purl (P): Used in ribbed sections and for texture variation
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas
- 2x2 Rib: A combination of knit and purl stitches worked in alternating columns, providing stretch and structure
- Stocking Stitch (St-st): Alternating rows of knit and purl, creating the smooth main fabric
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main fabric and 3¼mm needles for ribbed sections. The use of different needle sizes creates a tighter, more elastic rib compared to the main body.
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight. Crafters should always knit a gauge swatch to ensure proper fit and garment proportions before beginning.
Pattern Grading and Sizing
The pattern is graded across multiple children's sizes, with stitch counts and row counts varying accordingly. For example, the initial cast-on is 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on size, and subsequent shaping rows adjust proportionally. This allows the sweater to be knitted for children of different ages while maintaining proper proportions and fit.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires knitters to be comfortable with basic shaping techniques, reading charts, and managing intarsia colorwork. The intarsia technique adds complexity beyond simple stocking stitch, as it requires managing multiple yarn colors and bobbins to create the personalized moniker design without creating loose floats on the reverse side.
