Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Dan Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted pullover garment with ribbed edges and colorwork detailing, available in multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is a knitting pattern that utilizes the intarsia method for incorporating color work. Intarsia is a technique where different colored yarns are used to create a picture or design within the knitted fabric, with each color area worked separately and bobbins used to prevent tangling of yarn strands. This approach differs from stranded colorwork as it produces a single-thickness fabric without floats on the reverse side, making it ideal for children's garments where comfort and wearability are priorities.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a characteristic V-pattern appearance on the right side
- 2x2 Ribbing (2x2 rib): A knit-2, purl-2 ribbed pattern used for the cuffs, waistband, and neckline edges to provide elasticity and a neat, finished appearance
- Knit Stitch (k): Basic knit stitches forming the foundation of the stockinette stitch sections
- Purl Stitch (p): Used in combination with knit stitches for ribbing and texture variation
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas of the garment
Construction Details
The sweater is constructed using a flat knitting method with separate pieces for the back and front that are later seamed together. The pattern includes detailed shaping instructions for armholes, with decreases worked at regular intervals to create a fitted silhouette appropriate for children's sizing.
The back piece begins with casting on 70 stitches using 2¾mm needles, followed by ribbed edging worked over multiple rows. The main body is then worked in stockinette stitch with specific row counts varying by size. Armhole shaping involves decreasing one stitch at each end of every row over several rows, resulting in a narrower opening suitable for child-sized sleeves.
The front piece follows a similar construction method, with the intarsia chart providing the colorwork design placement. The pattern includes specific instructions for incorporating the charted design at designated row intervals, with color changes managed through the use of separate bobbins for each colored section.
Yarn and Needle Requirements
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight yarn suitable for creating garments with good drape and definition. The pattern specifies the use of 2¾mm needles for the main body sections and 3¼mm needles for ribbed edging, with needle size changes creating the necessary gauge adjustments between different stitch patterns.
Yarn quantities are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight. The intarsia technique requires multiple colors of yarn, with amounts depending on the specific design chart provided and the size being knitted.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, requiring knitters to have solid foundational skills in basic stitches, gauge measurement, and garment construction. The intarsia colorwork technique adds complexity beyond simple stitch work, requiring knitters to manage multiple yarn colors simultaneously and follow a detailed chart for accurate color placement.
Size Range
The pattern is provided in multiple children's sizes, with stitch counts and row counts varying throughout the instructions to accommodate different measurements. Size-specific information is indicated in brackets throughout the pattern, allowing knitters to select the appropriate numbers for their intended finished garment size.
