What is Being Made

The Inca Headband is a knitted headwear accessory designed as a one-size-fits-all piece with a finished circumference of 50 cm and a depth of 7.5 cm. This beginner-friendly knitting project creates a decorative band suitable for wearing around the head, combining both functional warmth and aesthetic appeal through its textured stitch pattern.

Yarn and Materials

This headband is crafted using Purl Alpaca Medium, a luxurious yarn composed of 100% alpaca fiber. The pattern requires only 1 ball of yarn, which contains 77 meters of yardage per 50-gram ball. The yarn weight is classified as aran, a medium-weight option that works up quickly while providing excellent drape and softness characteristic of alpaca fiber. Knitters will need one pair of 4 mm needles to complete the project, with the option to adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct finished measurements.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Inca Headband employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners while creating visual interest through a carefully constructed stitch pattern. The pattern utilizes several essential knitting stitches and techniques:

The pattern begins with casting on 17 stitches and progresses through a repeating sequence of rows that alternate between right-side (RS) and wrong-side (WS) rows. The stitch pattern creates a sophisticated textured fabric by varying the arrangement of knit and purl stitches across the width of the headband, building complexity while remaining accessible to beginner knitters.
