In Between Dreams Hat by Meiju Kallio
What is Being Made
The In Between Dreams Hat is a top-down sport-weight beanie designed by Meiju Kallio. This intermediate-level knitting project features a delicate lace pattern throughout, making it an elegant accessory suitable for various occasions. The hat is available in two sizes: Child and Woman, with finished head circumferences of approximately 21-22 inches (52-54 cm) for Child and 22.5-23.5 inches (56-58 cm) for Woman.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction begins at the top and works downward in a top-down method, which allows for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the hat as you progress. The pattern incorporates lace knitting, a decorative technique that creates openwork designs through strategic placement of yarn overs and decreases. Crafters will work with stockinette stitch as the base fabric in certain sections, providing a smooth, classic knit surface that contrasts beautifully with the lace elements.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The In Between Dreams Hat utilizes standard knitting abbreviations and techniques. Key stitches include:
- Stockinette stitch (st) – the foundational smooth fabric used in portions of the hat
- Yarn over (yo) – creates the decorative holes characteristic of lace patterns
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease made by slipping one stitch as if to knit, slipping a second stitch as if to knit, then knitting the two slipped stitches together through the back loop
These stitches combine to create the delicate lace pattern that defines this design.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The In Between Dreams Hat is worked with sport-weight yarn, classified as 3-ply. Sport weight is a lightweight yarn that produces a refined, drape-friendly fabric ideal for hats and accessories. The pattern calls for US 6 (4 mm) needles as the primary needle size for the main fabric.
Gauge is an important consideration for this project. When working in stockinette stitch with the US 6 needles, the gauge is 21 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). When working the lace pattern with the same needles, the gauge adjusts to 19 stitches and 27 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). Achieving proper gauge is essential for the hat to fit correctly and for the lace pattern to display as intended.
