In Autumn Beauty Knit Cape Pattern by Bunnymuff

What is Being Made

In Autumn Beauty is a knitted cape or poncho design created by independent designer Bunnymuff (Mona Zillah) and supported by Gathered Sheep Yarns. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a wearable garment inspired by the autumnal imagery of William Cullen Bryant's poetry. The design is available as a downloadable PDF pattern and comes in multiple sizes to accommodate different finished measurements.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for experienced beginners and intermediate knitters. The construction involves standard cast-on methods, primarily using the long-tail cast-on technique unless otherwise specified in the pattern instructions. Shaping is achieved through decreases, specifically using knit two stitches together (k2tog) to create fitted or tapered sections. The pattern also incorporates knitting through the back loop (ktbl), a technique that creates twisted stitches for textural interest or structural definition. The garment is finished with a slipped stitch bind-off method, which creates a particularly neat and elastic edge ideal for capes and ponchos that require flexible finishing.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and fundamental stitches including:

  • CO (Cast On) - Long-tail cast-on is the primary method unless otherwise noted
  • ktbl (Knit Through Back Loop) - Creates twisted stitches for texture or shaping
  • k2tog (Knit Two Together) - A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • BO (Bind Off) - Finished using the slipped stitch bind-off technique for an elastic, professional edge

The slipped stitch bind-off involves knitting two stitches, then passing both stitches from the right needle back to the left needle, inserting the right needle through the back loops of both stitches, knitting them together, and slipping the resulting stitch. This process repeats across all stitches for a secure yet flexible finish.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed to showcase Shetland 4ply yarn by Gathered Sheep Yarns, a fingering-weight yarn made from 100% pure Shetland wool. The yarn specifications are 234 yards (213.97 meters) per 55-gram skein, with mini skeins available at 96 yards (87.8 meters) per 20 grams.

The pattern calls for two colors:

  • MC (New Beginning) - Main color requiring 1 full 55-gram skein for all sizes, plus 1 mini skein. Yardage needed: 225 to 275 yards (206 to 252 meters) depending on size
  • CC1 (Ghoulish Cocktail) - Contrast color requiring 2 full 55-gram skeins for all sizes. Yardage needed: 275 to 390 yards (252 to 357 meters) depending on size

The pattern is worked on needles appropriate for fingering-weight yarn, though specific needle sizes are referenced in the full pattern document. The use of pure Shetland wool provides warmth, elasticity, and the characteristic softness ideal for a garment worn close to the body.
