Imperial Topaz Wrap by Andrea Crețu
What is Being Made
The Imperial topaz wrap is a crocheted shawl designed as the first pattern in the Gemstones collection. Named after the rare Imperial topaz gemstone, this wrap features a design inspired by the stone's rich color palette ranging from deep brick red to bright light orange, and mimics the visual appearance of stacked facets found in cushion-cut gemstones. The wrap is an ideal accessory project suitable for crocheters of all skill levels.
Craft and Technique
This pattern uses Tunisian crochet, a hybrid technique that combines elements of traditional crochet and knitting. Tunisian crochet creates a dense, fabric-like texture and is worked in a distinctive two-phase process: the forward pass (where loops are picked up along the row) and the return pass (where loops are closed off). This technique is ideal for creating structured wraps with excellent drape and stability.
Stitches Used
The Imperial topaz wrap features rows of eyelets separated by rows of simple stitches. The eyelet rows create an openwork pattern that allows the wrap to be lightweight and breathable, while the simple stitch rows provide structure and definition. This alternating pattern creates a visual effect reminiscent of the layered, faceted appearance of a cushion-cut gemstone, making the stitch work both functional and aesthetically meaningful.
