Product Description

Il grande favorito is a comfy and oversized sweater worked seamless from the top down. First the yoke is worked back and forth to the final neck CO, then the sweater is worked in rounds. The bottom is shaped with short-rows to create a longer back. Some tips for adjusting sizes are given in the pattern.

Choose a size with approx. 3 - 4 in of positive ease to get this "Oh, I wanna live in this sweater "- look.

The sample was knit in Ice Yarns Premium Angora held double, but any chunky/bulky yarn (held single) can be used. A suggested yarn is shown below.

Garment Overview

Il grande favorito is a comfy and oversized sweater design created by independent designer Isabell Kraemer. This knitting pattern produces a relaxed-fit pullover sweater with a contemporary silhouette, ideal for those seeking a comfortable layering piece or statement garment. The sweater is constructed using a top-down method, allowing for easy customization and fitting adjustments during the knitting process.

Construction Method

The sweater is worked from the top down, a popular technique that begins with casting on stitches at the neckline and progresses downward toward the hem. This construction approach offers several advantages: knitters can try on the garment as it develops, easily adjust length to personal preference, and seamlessly integrate sleeve and body sections. The top-down method also minimizes seaming, resulting in a more refined finished garment.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for experienced beginners and beyond. The construction involves working in the round using circular needles, a method that creates seamless fabric and maintains consistent stitch tension. Ribbing is used for the neckline and sleeve cuffs, providing elasticity and a polished finish. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases throughout the body and sleeve sections.

Yarn and Materials

Il grande favorito calls for Premium Angora by ICE YARNS, a luxurious fiber choice. The pattern specifies 3 to 5 skeins depending on size, with each skein containing approximately 600 meters (656 yards). The yarn is worked doubled, meaning two strands are held together simultaneously during knitting, creating a bulkier fabric. Alternatively, knitters may substitute approximately 720 to 1080 meters (790 to 1180 yards) of bulky-weight yarn worked as a single strand, provided it achieves the specified gauge.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the sweater:

  • 6.5 mm (US 10.5) circular needle, 80 cm (36 inches) long for knitting the body in the round
  • 6.5 mm (US 10.5) double-pointed needles or longer circular needle (using the magic loop method) for sleeve cap shaping and sleeve circumference knitting
  • 6 mm (US 10) circular needle, 60 cm (24 inches) long for neckline finishing and ribbed edging
  • 6 mm (US 10) double-pointed needles or longer circular needle for sleeve ribbing

Additional Materials

Completing the project requires stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and shaping points, as well as stitch holders or scrap yarn for temporarily securing live stitches during construction. These tools are essential for managing the multiple active stitch sections inherent in top-down sweater construction.

Skill Level

Classified as an intermediate project, Il grande favorito is best suited for knitters with solid foundational skills including comfort with circular needle techniques, increasing and decreasing stitches, and working in the round. The top-down construction method and use of sport-weight yarn (worked doubled or substituted with bulky yarn) make this an accessible intermediate project that builds confidence in garment construction.
