What is Being Made
The I Love A Theme Hat is a knitted hat designed by Corrine Walcher, featuring a finished circumference of 17 inches when unstretched and 24 inches when stretched, with a height of 8.5 inches from hem to tip. This intermediate-level knitting project is part of a coordinated collection that also includes a matching cowl and fingerless gloves, making it ideal for creating a cohesive themed accessory set.
Techniques and Stitches
This hat employs a straightforward construction method combining simple ribbing with a minimal lace pattern. The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches and techniques suitable for intermediate knitters, including:
- Knit (K) stitches for stockinette sections
- Purl (P) stitches for ribbed texture
- Knit two together (K2tog) decreases for shaping
- Purl two together (P2tog) decreases
- Repeat instructions for pattern consistency
- Knitting in the round for seamless construction
The lace pattern is intentionally minimal, making this design accessible while still providing visual interest. The hat is knit in the round using a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches in blocked stockinette.
Yarn and Materials
The I Love A Theme Hat is designed to work with DK or sport weight yarn. The sample was knit using Space Cadet Lyra, a 100% superwash merino yarn with 270 yards per 100 grams. The sample hat used 120 yards total, divided among 5 different colors from the Perilous linking sweater set colorway, making it an excellent project for using up leftover gradient yarn from other projects.
This pattern requires a set of 5 double-pointed needles or a 16-inch circular needle in US size 5 (3.75 mm), or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge.
Design Notes
The I Love A Theme Hat was created by designer Corrine Walcher as a way to utilize leftover yarn from a cardigan sample, incorporating the same lace pattern used in that larger project. The hat is named as a tribute to the designer's friend Dorothy, who loves a theme—a personal touch that reflects the hat's versatile, coordinated design approach.
