Hyto Cardigan by Fluffy Su Don
What is Being Made
The Hyto Cardigan is a top-down knit cardigan designed by Fluffy Su Don. This garment is constructed using a seamless top-down method, making it an excellent project for knitters who prefer minimal finishing work. The cardigan is available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, with bust circumferences ranging from 86cm to 106cm and finished lengths between 55cm and 65cm at the back.
Construction Technique
The Hyto Cardigan employs a top-down construction method, a popular approach in modern knitting that allows for easy fit adjustments during the knitting process. The pattern begins at the neckline and progresses downward. Once the piece reaches the underarm, it is divided into separate sections for the body and sleeves. The body is worked flat using circular needles, while the sleeves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles. This combination of flat and circular knitting techniques creates a professional-looking finished garment with minimal seaming required.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Hyto Cardigan incorporates several knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic appearance
- Cable stitches are featured in the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted, dimensional patterns
- Yarn overs (YO) are used to create decorative openwork or lace elements
- Decrease stitches including a specialized decrease where the third stitch on the left-hand needle is passed over the first two stitches, contributing to shaping and patterning
These stitch combinations create a textured, visually interesting cardigan suitable for an intermediate knitting level.
Materials Required
Yarn: The Hyto Cardigan is designed to be worked in Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk, a luxury blend yarn that provides softness and drape. The yardage requirements are 700–900 meters total, distributed across 5–7 balls depending on the chosen size.
Needles and Accessories: Knitters will need circular needles in 40cm and 60cm lengths, as well as double-pointed needles in both 5mm and 4mm sizes. Additional accessories include a cable needle for working cable stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and stitch holders for securing stitches during the construction process.
Gauge and Blocking
The recommended gauge is 17 stitches by 22 rows over 10 by 10 centimeters in stocking stitch, worked on 5mm needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, and blocking is recommended to even out the stitches and set the fabric.
