Product Description

Nordic stranded colorwork and complementary spiraling stripes make these hat and mittens a set. The angora halo gives the yarn its softness and allows the colors to blend, softening the colorwork. The patterned hat and mitten cuffs are bordered with left and right facing braids created using purled stitches. The shape of this hat is inspired from pillbox style hats, and the pointy mittens remind me of the mittens my great-aunt once knit for my siblings and I when we were children.

Hyde Park Hat & Mittens by BeckyinVT

Project Overview

The Hyde Park Hat & Mittens is an intermediate-level knitting pattern set designed by BeckyinVT that features coordinated accessories combining classic colorwork techniques with tailored shaping. This downloadable PDF pattern includes instructions for both a structured hat and fitted mittens, each available in multiple sizes to accommodate different wearers.

Hat Design & Construction

The hat features a distinctive pillbox-inspired silhouette with pointed shaping elements. Available in five sizes ranging from extra small through extra large, with circumferences from 18.25 inches (45.5 cm) to 23.75 inches (61 cm), the hat accommodates a wide range of head sizes. The construction utilizes two-color colorwork throughout, creating visual interest while maintaining structural integrity.

The hat is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, with the colorwork pattern worked at gauge on the larger needle size. The pattern requires careful stitch marker placement, including one unique marker to denote the end of round, ensuring accurate colorwork alignment and shaping transitions.

Mittens Design & Construction

The mittens feature pointed shaping that complements the hat's aesthetic. Available in three sizes with circumferences of 6 inches (15 cm), 7.5 inches (19 cm), and 9 inches (23 cm), the mittens are designed to fit snugly around the hand. Like the hat, the mittens incorporate two-color colorwork and are constructed using double-pointed needles worked in the round.

Yarn & Materials

Yarn Fiber: Classic Elite Yarns Fresco, a premium blend consisting of 60% wool, 30% baby alpaca, and 10% angora. This combination provides warmth, softness, and subtle sheen characteristic of luxury winter accessories.

Yardage Requirements:

  • Hat Main Color (MC) #5378 Brown: 113 to 221 yards depending on size
  • Hat Contrast Color (CC) #5364 Blue: 76 to 147 yards depending on size
  • Mittens Main Color (MC) #5378 Brown: 56 to 91 yards depending on size
  • Mittens Contrast Color (CC) #5364 Blue: 42 to 69 yards depending on size

Yarn is packaged in 50-gram skeins with 164 yards per skein. Hat projects require one to two skeins of main color and one skein of contrast color. Mitten projects require one skein of each color.

Needles & Notions

The pattern calls for US 3 (3.25 mm) double-pointed needles as the primary working needles and US 2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles, one size smaller, for ribbed sections or gauge adjustments. Knitters should select needle size based on achieving the specified gauge rather than relying solely on the recommended sizes.

Additional Notions Required:

  • 12 stitch markers, including one unique marker to denote end of round
  • Stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding stitches
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends

Gauge & Tension

The Hyde Park pattern is worked at a gauge of 29 stitches and 34 rows per 4-inch (10 cm) square when measured over the colorwork chart on the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, particularly important when working in multiple sizes. Knitters should knit a gauge swatch in the round using the colorwork pattern to ensure accuracy before beginning the project.

Techniques & Stitches

Colorwork Method: The pattern employs stranded colorwork (also called Fair Isle technique), where two colors are carried across the row and floated behind the working stitches. This creates the visual pattern while maintaining fabric elasticity and warmth.

Construction Method: Both the hat and mittens are constructed in the round using double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming. This method creates seamless, tubular garments with even stitch tension throughout.

Shaping Techniques: The hat and mittens incorporate decreases to create the pointed shaping characteristic of the design. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and
