Product Description
“Huwari” - airy in Japanese - is a boxy pullover with leaning cables on the sides of body, and with a large, warm cowl.
The pullover is worked from the top down. The fronts and backs are provisionally cast on and German short rows are used to shape the shoulders. They are worked back and forth separately to the underarm, then joined to be worked in the round to the hem. On completion of the body, the shoulders are seamed with three-needle bind off, then sleeves stitches are picked up and worked from the top down in the round. Stitches are picked up around the neck for the cowl, worked in 2×2 rib.
Huwari Pullover by Ririko
What Is Being Made
Huwari is a quick-to-knit boxy pullover sweater designed by Ririko. This pullover features a relaxed, comfortable fit with a contemporary silhouette. The garment showcases leaning cables positioned on the sides of the body, adding visual interest and texture to the piece. A defining characteristic of Huwari is its large, warm cowl neckline, which provides both style and practical warmth. The sweater is available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust circumferences from 39¼ inches (99.5 cm) to 57 inches (145 cm).
Techniques and Construction
Huwari is constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked primarily in the round for efficiency and seamless construction. The design incorporates cable knitting as a primary decorative technique, with cables positioned along the sides of the body to create vertical lines and textural depth. The pattern is engineered to be beginner-friendly despite the inclusion of cable work, making it an excellent project for knitters developing their skills. The boxy silhouette is achieved through strategic shaping and ease allowances, with suggested ease of 6 to 11¾ inches (15 to 30 cm) at the bust, allowing for comfortable layering and movement.
Stitches Used
The Huwari pattern employs cable stitches as the primary decorative element, with leaning cables creating directional visual interest along the sides of the body. The pattern utilizes standard knit and purl stitches to create the stockinette stitch base fabric, which provides a smooth canvas for the cable work to stand out. The cowl neckline is worked using knit stitches to create a warm, textured collar. Ribbing techniques are incorporated at appropriate areas to provide structure and elasticity to the finished garment.
Materials and Yarn
Huwari is designed for aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that knits quickly and creates a warm, durable fabric. The pattern specifies BC Garn Semilla Flamé, a yarn composed of 100% organic wool with a yardage of 95 meters (104 yards) per 50-gram ball. The sample shown is knitted in colorway #105 (Pink). Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from approximately 750 meters (820 yards) for the smallest size (XS) to 1,300 meters (1,422 yards) for the largest size (4XL). Knitters may substitute any aran weight yarn of similar fiber content and yardage specifications.
Needles and Tools
Huwari requires a 6 mm (US 10) circular needle in lengths ranging from 40 to 100 centimeters (16 to 40 inches). Circular needles accommodate the in-the-round construction method and allow for the large stitch counts required for the boxy silhouette. The range of needle lengths accommodates different sizing options and personal knitting preferences.
