Huddle is a simple, unisex vest designed by Cristina T. Ghirlanda that combines traditional styling with modern practicality. This garment features a distinctive kimono front construction, making it exceptionally easy to dress and undress, even on sleeping babies. The design works equally well for boys and girls, offering a versatile wardrobe staple. The kimono front also provides an extra layer across the front torso, offering additional warmth where it matters most for young wearers.

Construction Method

Huddle is worked from the top down using a circular needle, allowing knitters to customize the finished length to their exact preferences. This top-down construction method provides flexibility and control throughout the knitting process. The garment is available in five size options with finished chest circumferences ranging from 41 cm to 63 cm (16 to 25 inches) and overall lengths from 26 cm to 42 cm (10 to 16.5 inches). Detailed measurements are provided in both centimeters and inches for precise sizing.

Stitches and Techniques

The entire vest is worked exclusively in garter stitch, making this an ideal project for beginner knitters. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row on both flat and circular needles, producing a classic, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. This straightforward stitch requires no complex techniques, color changes, or shaping expertise, allowing new knitters to focus on developing fundamental skills while creating a beautiful, wearable garment.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Huddle is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category ideal for creating garments with good drape and durability. The pattern is demonstrated using Cascade Yarns Eco Cloud, a natural fiber blend consisting of 70% merino wool and 30% alpaca. This yarn is supplied in 100-gram skeins with a yardage of 150 meters (164 yards) per skein.

Yardage requirements vary by size: 180 meters (195 yards) for the smallest size through 430 meters (470 yards) for the largest size, with a built-in 15% allowance included in these calculations. The pattern example shown features color #1809 Dove Grey from the Cascade Yarns Eco Cloud line.

Needles and Tools

This project requires a 5.5 mm / US 9 circular needle measuring 40 cm (16 inches) in length. The circular needle format accommodates the top-down construction method and allows for seamless knitting in the round where appropriate.
