Product Description
These socks were originally a part of the Sanguine Gryphon's Spring 2011 collection celebrating Art Nouveau themes.
The Hotel Tassel is a house built in Brussels, Belgium, by Victor Horta in the 1890s. Tree-shaped pillars in its central staircase draw the eye upwards, while iron railings twist around them, echoing the lush golden-brown swirls painted on the walls and arranged into the mosaic floor. These top-down socks use twisted stitch cables to imitate some of the patterns found in the Hotel Tassel with the right and left socks appearing as mirror images of each other.
Instructions are included for the basic construction with charts for the pattern.

Hotel Tassel Socks by Emily Wood
What is Being Made
Hotel Tassel Socks are a women's sock design created by Emily Wood, available in three sizes: S (M, L) corresponding to US shoe sizes 5-6 (7-8, 9-10) and European sizes 35-36 (37.5-38.5, 40-42). The finished socks measure approximately 9 to 9.5 inches from heel to cuff and 9 to 10 inches from toe to heel, depending on size selection. These socks are knit from the top down using a construction method that allows for customization of sock length.
Craft and Primary Technique
Hotel Tassel Socks are created using the knitting craft. This is an intermediate-level project, meaning knitters should have foundational knitting skills and experience with basic techniques before beginning. The socks are knit from the top down, a popular sock construction method that begins at the leg opening and works downward toward the toe, allowing knitters to try on the sock as they progress and adjust the final length as needed.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary stitch used throughout Hotel Tassel Socks is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern includes a Top of Foot chart with specific row repeats (R63, R67, or R71 depending on size) that can be repeated to adjust the overall sock length to the knitter's preference. The tassel detail referenced in the sock name is incorporated into the design, though specific tassel construction details are referenced in the pattern directions section of the PDF.
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions
Hotel Tassel Socks are designed to be knit with 4-ply weight yarn. The pattern specifies The Sanguine Gryphon 'Eidos' yarn, which is 100% superwash merino fiber. Yardage requirements are 1 skein (420 yards total) for sizes S and M, and 2 skeins for size L. The sample shown features the 'Positivism' colorway from the Spring/Summer 2011 collection.
Needles required include US 1/2.25 mm circular needles, double-pointed needles (dpns), or a combination, sized to achieve the specified gauge. Knitters should select needle size based on obtaining the correct gauge rather than following needle size recommendations alone. Additional notions include a cable needle (optional), stitch markers (optional), and a tapestry needle for finishing.
Gauge and Fit Considerations
The required gauge for Hotel Tassel Socks is 32 stitches and 52 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and sock fit. Knitters should choose their sock size based on foot circumference rather than shoe size alone, as individual fit preferences vary. The pattern construction allows for length modifications by adjusting the number of repetitions of the Top of Foot chart rows, making it adaptable to different leg lengths and personal preferences.
