Product Description
A cosy hot water bottle cover made to fit a standard 2 litre hot water bottle (approximately 33cm x 20cm).
For the front of the cover, you will make 6 motifs and then you will square them off whilst joining them continuously. If you are not comfortable with this method, then included is an optional round to square off your motifs and then join each one using a whip stitch.
The back is worked as a granny stripe, alternating colours.
Both pieces are then joined together and a neck is then created.
Pom poms are added to give the cover a contemporary look. You can use a mini pom pom maker or alternatively use a fork to create them like I did! There a plenty of YouTube tutorials on how to make these.
Hot Water Bottle Cover by Kerry Taylor
What Is Being Made
This is a soft, decorative hot water bottle cover designed to fit a standard 2 litre hot water bottle (33cm x 20cm). The finished cover measures approximately 35cm x 22cm, providing a cosy and colourful layer of insulation. The design is inspired by flower petals and rainbows, making it both functional and visually appealing for everyday use or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern employs UK crochet terminology and is constructed using treble stitches as the primary stitch, as indicated by the tension square measurement of 19 stitches x 8 rows over 10cm worked in treble. The cover is worked to specific dimensions to ensure proper fit around a standard hot water bottle.
Stitches Used
- Treble (tr) – the primary stitch used throughout the cover, as confirmed by the tension square specification
- Additional foundational stitches typical of crochet construction for shaping and finishing
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, which provides a lightweight yet warm fabric suitable for a hot water bottle cover. The designer used variegated and plain contrast yarns to achieve the colourful, petal-inspired aesthetic:
- Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK 100g in shade 964 Oatmeal (A) – plain contrast yarn
- Sirdar Hayfield Spirit DK 100g in shade 408 Sundown (B) – variegated yarn
The pattern notes that any DK weight yarn in your chosen colours will work well, and suggests that cotton DK yarn is an excellent alternative to acrylic for a natural fibre option.
Hooks and Finishing Supplies
- 3.5mm crochet hook
- 4mm crochet hook
- Darning needle for weaving in ends
- 3 x 20mm buttons for embellishment or closure
- Mini pom pom maker (optional) for decorative finishing touches
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with colour changes and shaping. The pattern recommends reading through the entire instructions once before beginning to familiarise yourself with the photographs and diagrams provided.
