Product Description
Hot Potato is a slipper sock pattern which combines a basic upper with a jacquard double knit heel, sole and toe to create exceptional warmth and padding where you need it most.
The upper part is worked in single thickness, but the heel, sole and toe are worked using jaquard double knitting giving double thick heel and toe, and a squashy, cushioned, triple thick sole.
Whilst the double knitting isn't in itself difficult, this sock does require a little bit of concentration in places. The sock as written works up well for adult feet, consider going down a needle size for smaller feet or even slightly fulling the sock for an even denser finish.
Exact yardage will depend on your size, but plan to have 100g of a typical aran/worsted for your main colour and about 50g of contrast colour available.

What is Being Made
Hot Potato Socks is a knitted sock pattern designed to provide exceptional warmth and cushioning in the areas that need it most. The socks feature a basic upper section worked in a single color, combined with a reinforced heel, sole, and toe created using jacquard double knit construction. This strategic combination of techniques results in a durable, padded sock ideal for cold weather wear or those seeking extra comfort underfoot.
Construction and Techniques
The Hot Potato Socks pattern employs a cuff-down construction method, beginning at the ribbed cuff and working downward toward the toe. The primary innovation in this design is the integration of jacquard double knitting in the heel, sole, and toe regions. This advanced technique creates a double-thick fabric by simultaneously knitting with two colors in an alternating pattern, resulting in significantly increased padding and insulation exactly where walkers and wearers experience the most impact and heat loss. The upper portion of the sock is worked in straightforward stockinette stitch using a single main color yarn.
Stitches Used
The pattern primarily utilizes stockinette stitch for the cuff and leg sections, providing a smooth, classic sock fabric. The heel, sole, and toe sections employ jacquard double knit stitching, which involves working with two colors simultaneously to create the characteristic double-layered, cushioned construction. This technique requires careful color management and attention to tension to ensure even, professional results.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Hot Potato Socks are designed to be worked in Aran or Worsted weight yarn, offering versatility in yarn selection while maintaining consistent results. The pattern requires approximately 100 grams of main color yarn and 50 grams of contrast color yarn, with leftover yarn expected. Two needle sizes are specified: 4.5mm (US 7) needles for the cuff to create a snug, elastic edge, and 5mm (US 8) needles for the remainder of the sock. The recommended gauge is approximately 18-19 stitches to 4 inches in stockinette stitch on 5mm needles, though the pattern accommodates flexibility in yarn weights. A blunt needle for weaving in ends completes the required supplies.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced due to the jacquard double knit technique required for the heel, sole, and toe. Knitters should be comfortable with color work, managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously, and maintaining even tension across different stitch techniques before attempting this project. The cuff-down construction and stockinette sections are intermediate-level skills, but the double knit colorwork elevates the overall difficulty.
