Hot Cocoa Mittens by Lina Knits

What is Being Made

The Hot Cocoa mittens are a pair of cozy, full-finger mittens designed to keep hands warm and comfortable. These mittens feature a heavily cabled cuff that transitions into a long ribbed section covering the hand and fingers. The design is inspired by the warmth and comfort of a cup of hot cocoa, making them an ideal accessory for cold weather. The finished mittens have a wrist circumference of 18 cm (7 inches) and a total length of 28 cm, fitting most adult hands.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Hot Cocoa mittens showcase several key knitting techniques that create both visual interest and functional warmth. The pattern employs cable knitting as the primary decorative element, with heavily cabled cuffs that add texture and structure to the wrist area. The cabled section is worked using a cable needle to cross stitches and create the distinctive twisted rope-like appearance.

Following the cable cuff, the design transitions into a 1x1 ribbed pattern that covers the hand and fingers. Ribbing is a fundamental knitting stitch that creates vertical columns of texture, providing excellent stretch and recovery while maintaining warmth. This combination of cables and ribbing ensures the mittens are both visually appealing and functionally snug.

The mittens are worked in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, a technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for mittens and gloves. This method eliminates the need for seaming and ensures a smooth, comfortable fit against the skin.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Hot Cocoa mittens require 2 skeins of bulky weight yarn, totaling approximately 155 meters (170 yards). The sample pattern was created using Ella Rae Chunky Merino Superwash, a 100% merino wool yarn that offers both softness and durability. This yarn comes in 100-gram skeins with 124 meters (136 yards) per skein. The sample mittens were knit in two colorways: Greyhound Heather for a sophisticated grey pair and Espresso Beans for a rich brown pair.

The pattern calls for 5 mm (US 8) double-pointed needles or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge. Additional materials include 3 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable work, and a stitch holder or waste yarn to temporarily hold stitches during construction.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches by 22 rounds over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in 1x1 rib pattern after blocking. The cable panel, which consists of 12 stitches, measures 5.5 centimeters (2.25 inches) in width. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the mittens fit properly and that the cable panels display the intended visual impact. The pattern is offered in one size, designed to fit most adult hands comfortably.

Difficulty Level

The Hot Cocoa mittens are rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the pattern requires familiarity with fundamental techniques such as working in the round and reading stitch patterns, the cable work and ribbing are manageable for knitters with some experience. The bulky weight yarn works up quickly, making this a satisfying project that delivers results relatively fast despite the intermediate skill requirement.
