Product Description
Beautiful poncho in a leaf pattern that gradually grows larger. It might feel challenging at first, but the pattern has a certain logic and flow that makes it easier than it looks and a joy to make!
The poncho is made in the round from the neck down. At last the cowl neck is added. You can adjust the height of the cowl as you wish. The textured leaf pattern is made in post double crochet and the pattern includes a photo tutorial for the stitches, written instructions and charts.
There are 2 sizes available. At chest height the poncho measures 140/160 cm (55/63 in) in circumference and 180/200 cm (71/78.5 in) at lower edge.
I used a wool mixture yarn and a 3 mm hook.
The pattern is available in english (US terms) and danish.
Hosta Poncho by Sidsel Sangild
What is Being Made
The Hosta Poncho is a circular crochet garment designed as a wearable cape-style piece. This intermediate-level project is constructed in the round, creating a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is worked entirely in crochet, using a circular construction method. The poncho is built from the center outward in continuous rounds, which allows for seamless shaping and an elegant drape. The designer notes that the pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary stitch structure features a rib pattern that forms the foundation of the garment's texture and elasticity. The pattern employs front post double crochet (FPdc) stitches as a key decorative and structural element, which creates dimensional texture by working around the post of stitches rather than into the top loops. The designer uses abbreviated notation for efficiency: "1F" represents one front post double crochet around the next stitch, and "3B" indicates one back post double crochet around each of the next three stitches. This post-stitch technique is essential for achieving the pattern's visual interest and the characteristic ribbed appearance.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is designed in two sizes. Gauge is measured at 27 stitches and 15 rows in rib pattern over 10 cm (4 inches). The designer emphasizes that stitch gauge is more critical than row gauge for this project's success. A gauge swatch is included in the pattern instructions to help crocheters verify their tension before beginning the full project.
Materials and Tools
The Hosta Poncho requires 9 skeins for the smaller size or 11 skeins for the larger size of Reloved merino yarn in color PO84, with each skein containing 230 meters and weighing 50 grams. A 3 mm crochet hook (or the size needed to achieve proper gauge) is recommended for construction.
Pattern Notes and Considerations
The designer provides helpful guidance for working the pattern successfully. In certain yarn types, the circular construction may have a tendency to skew or twist; this is less likely to occur with wool yarns. Should skewing be noticed during construction, the pattern can be worked from the wrong side for all numbered rounds without changing the instructions—this alternative approach helps maintain even fabric. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and can be found in the designer's Ravelry store for reference and future projects.
