Product Description

The stitch pattern in this hat expands on the corrugated rib stitch popularly used in waistbands and wristbands of Fair Isle type sweaters. You knit one color and purl the second color so it does not curl, although it is not stretchy like most ribbing. This would be a good time to learn two handed stranding - I usually do the knit stitches Continental (pick) and the purls English (throw.) There are also a few basic cable rows.

Honeycomb Two-toned Hat by Julie Yeager

Project Overview

The Honeycomb Two-toned Hat is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Julie Yeager that creates a sophisticated two-color hat using an innovative corrugated rib stitch technique. This pattern is ideal for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond basic knitting and explore advanced colorwork and cable techniques.

What is Being Made

This pattern produces a finished adult hat with an 18-inch diameter that fits head sizes up to 22 inches. The hat measures 9 inches from the brim to the center crown, providing comfortable coverage and a classic silhouette. The two-toned construction creates visual interest through strategic color placement and stitch manipulation.

Stitch Techniques and Methods

The Honeycomb Two-toned Hat features several key stitching techniques that make it an excellent learning project for intermediate to advanced knitters:

  • Corrugated Rib Stitch: This stitch expands on the corrugated rib commonly seen in Fair Isle sweater waistbands and wristbands. The technique involves knitting one color while purling the second color, which prevents curling while maintaining the visual appeal of the two-tone design. Unlike traditional ribbing, this stitch is not particularly stretchy.
  • Two-Handed Stranding: The pattern introduces knitters to two-handed stranding colorwork, a technique where one hand works in the Continental style (pick method) for knit stitches while the other hand uses the English style (throw method) for purl stitches. This hybrid approach can improve speed and consistency in colorwork.
  • Cable Rows: The pattern incorporates basic cable techniques, adding textural depth and dimension to the hat's construction.
  • Double-Pointed Needle Technique: The hat is worked on circular needles and double-pointed needles, which is standard for crown shaping in hat construction.

Materials Required

The Honeycomb Two-toned Hat requires worsted or aran weight yarn in two contrasting colors. The pattern calls for approximately 100 yards each of two colors, totaling about 200 yards. The original design uses Vanna's Choice yarn in Sapphire (Color A) and Linen (Color B), though the pattern notes that other suitable yarns include Cascade 220, Paton's Classic Wool, and Noro Kureyon.

Essential tools include Size 8 (5.0 mm) 16-inch circular needles and matching double-pointed needles, a cable needle for cable work, and a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats. Needle size may be adjusted based on achieving the correct gauge.

Gauge and Skill Level

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 23 rows, which is typical for worsted weight yarn. The skill level is listed as intermediate, requiring familiarity with basic cable techniques and comfort working with double-pointed needles. However, the advanced difficulty rating reflects the complexity of managing two-color stranding while simultaneously executing cable stitches, making it suitable for knitters with solid foundational skills who are ready to challenge themselves with combined techniques.
