Product Description
This scarf is light and soft around the neck. It is one generous size so you can wear it many different ways. I'm using just Knit & Purl stitches but due to the nature of the material, this pattern would suit intermediate level knitters with a few hours to spare.
The wool I used for this scarf is provided in the pattern, but it is now discontinued. Other lightweight yarns, preferably alpaca or blend, would work very well. You might find knitting with this fine yarn easier using bamboo needles.
Highland Wool Scarf by BelaFarCrafts
What is Being Made
The Highland Wool Scarf is a knitted accessory measuring approximately 13cm x 2m (5 inches x 79 inches) after washing. This intermediate-level scarf project uses a luxurious blend of alpaca and wool fibers to create a finished piece suitable for everyday wear or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for 2 balls of SMC Select Highland Alpaca Fino in Cream #07325. Each ball weighs 50g and provides approximately 250 meters (273 yards) of yarn. The fiber content is 50% Alpaca and 50% Andean Highland new wool, combining the softness of alpaca with the durability and warmth of traditional highland wool. The yarn is classified as 4-ply/DK/sport weight, making it suitable for creating delicate stitch definition while maintaining good drape.
For needles, the pattern recommends 3.50mm to 4.00mm needles (US 4 to US 6). The designer used single-pointed needles in size 3.75mm (US 5) for tighter, more controlled knitting. Knitters are encouraged to test different needle sizes and yarn types to achieve their preferred fabric characteristics, though it is essential to purchase all yarn from the same dye lot to ensure color consistency throughout the project.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 25 stitches x 32 rows over a 10cm (4-inch) square. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The designer recommends knitting several test squares before beginning the full scarf to verify how the chosen yarn and needles will perform and to ensure the final piece matches the intended measurements.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Highland Wool Scarf employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern uses the following essential stitches:
- Knit stitch (K): The basic forward stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl stitch (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textural contrast and pattern variation
- Garter stitch: Created by knitting every row, this produces a thick, spongy fabric with horizontal ridges and is used for the edge borders
- Stockinette stitch variations: Alternating knit and purl rows create the primary textured pattern
The scarf construction begins with casting on 43 stitches using the 3.75mm needles. The first three rows establish the foundation using garter stitch (knitting all stitches) and a simple knit-purl border pattern. The main pattern then repeats a sequence of rows that combine knit and purl stitches in a structured arrangement. Specifically, the pattern alternates between rows featuring edge stitches (K1 on each side with K4 and P4 borders) and a central repeat section of alternating P3 and K7 stitch groups. This creates a balanced, textured fabric with visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate-level knitters.
The repeat pattern structure allows knitters to develop rhythm and consistency as they progress along the length of the scarf. The combination of knit and purl stitches creates subtle dimensional texture that showcases the natural qualities of the alpaca-wool blend without requiring complex colorwork or advanced techniques.
