Great pattern. Very detailed and relatively easy to follow. I would say you would have to be an experienced knitter - it’s quite difficult to keep track of each panel and there are 4 panel, each with different row repeat’s. However after numerous mistakes and undo’s I have nearly finished and I’m very pleased. Maybe the second one will be easier (twins)

Product Description
This is a carseat blanket to match my Cable and Lace cot blanket, featuring similar elements - cables, lacey hearts and pleated border which is knitted separately and then sewn on.
Pattern presented as 8 page pdf and features charts, written instructions and photographs of various stages of the knit. It calls for about 450m DK yarn, and circular needles (due to width of the blanket) 3-4mm, depending what you usually use when working DK. I knit fairly loose, so 3mm is the size I use. Cable needle, stitch markers and tapestry needle are also required.
Finished size and gauge are measured after washing/blocking.
As always with all my patterns it is for your personal use only, meaning you can't resell the pattern nor blankets made using it. This shape is now registered with IPO.
And as always I offer support on all my patterns, so I invite you to get in touch via email provided.
Big thanks to the ladies who tested the pattern for me - Karen, Rhonda and Jackie.
Hearts and Pleats and More Car Seat Blanket
What is Being Made
Hearts and Pleats and More is a semi-circular car seat blanket designed by Irina Smith. This knitted throw measures approximately 55x65cm after blocking and features decorative lace heart motifs combined with pleated textures. The blanket is constructed from the top edge downward, with a separately knitted border that is sewn on after completion. This design offers a smaller, portable alternative to full-sized baby blankets while maintaining sophisticated stitch work suitable for car seats and travel.
Techniques Used
The blanket employs top-down construction, a method that allows for easy adjustments and shaping as you work. The semi-circular shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked into the main body of the blanket. The separately knitted border is attached using a sewn seam, providing a finished edge and professional appearance. This construction approach is characteristic of Irina Smith's car seat blanket designs and allows for precise control over the final dimensions.
Stitches Used
- Knit and Purl - foundational stitches forming the base fabric
- Yarn Over (YO) - creates openwork and lace elements
- K2tog - knit two stitches together for right-leaning decreases
- SKPO - slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over for left-leaning decreases
- S2KPO - slip two stitches together, knit one, pass slipped stitches over for double decreases
- Cable 3x3 - three-stitch cables creating textured pleated effects
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 150 grams (445 meters or 483 yards) total. Irina Smith used Stylecraft Special DK and also recommends James C Brett Innocence DK as suitable alternatives for baby knitwear. When substituting yarns, yardage should be prioritized over weight, as yardage varies significantly between manufacturers.
Needles required are 3mm or 4mm, with the choice depending on individual knitting tension. Irina Smith uses 3mm needles despite knitting with a relatively loose gauge, making this a helpful reference point for pattern customization.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. The combination of lace work, cable stitches, and shaping techniques requires solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with decreases and yarn overs. The top-down construction and separate border attachment add complexity beyond beginner-level projects.
