Product Description

****USE ANY YARN - please see appendix for how to work out gauge and sizing ****

I was inspired to design this warm winter hat by all the people and organisations who care for children when they need it.

I’ve chosen a double-stranded, washable and affordable, double-knit yarn for this super easy hat, to give a "super chunky" gauge. You could use any yarn you like if it meets the gauge. The hat has a simple contrasting stitch heart on the front and back. The hat is knitted flat and visibly seamed, with one heart on the seam. The hat is designed to wordlessly communicate a “bad hair day”. Some people don’t like to talk about their feelings or just can't express their emotions. If you feel a bit like you need some kindness you can communicate that by wearing the seam at the front.

Heartbroken Beanie Hat by TabithaTuesdayknits

What Is Being Made

The Heartbroken beanie hat is a hand-knit winter hat designed as a quick, beginner-friendly knitting project. This cosy beanie features a distinctive design element: a simple contrasting stitch heart displayed on both the front and back of the hat, with an additional heart positioned on the visible seam. The design is intended to wordlessly communicate a casual, relaxed aesthetic often associated with a "bad hair day" vibe, making it both a practical and expressive accessory.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Heartbroken beanie is knitted flat rather than in the round, which simplifies the construction process for knitters of all skill levels. The hat is then seamed together using visible seaming, which becomes an intentional design feature by incorporating one of the heart motifs directly onto the seam line. This flat-knit, seamed construction method makes the pattern accessible to beginners while creating distinctive visual details that enhance the finished garment's character.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes a simple contrasting stitch technique to create the heart designs. The heart motifs are worked in a contrasting color or stitch pattern against the main body of the hat, creating visual interest through this straightforward stitch variation. The simplicity of the stitch work reinforces the beginner-friendly nature of this project.

Yarn and Materials

The Heartbroken beanie is designed to work with double-knit yarn held double-stranded to achieve a "super chunky" gauge, creating a warm, dense fabric quickly. The pattern specifies washable and affordable double-knit yarn as the recommended choice, though knitters can substitute any yarn that meets the specified gauge requirements. This flexibility allows crafters to choose yarns based on their preferences and availability while maintaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the hat.

Difficulty Level and Project Scope

Rated as a beginner-level pattern, the Heartbroken beanie is an ideal introduction to hat knitting. The quick-knit nature of the project—made possible by the super chunky gauge and straightforward construction—makes it an achievable goal for new knitters while remaining satisfying for experienced crafters seeking a fast, gratifying project.

Designer and Purpose

Created by TabithaTuesdayknits, this pattern was inspired by a desire to support vulnerable children through charitable organizations. The designer chose to create this warm, accessible hat pattern to help fundraise for Childline and the NSPCC, organizations dedicated to providing safe spaces and non-judgmental support for children in need.
