Product Description
Hayfield Day Tripper CAL Week 2 – Half N Half Square Crochet Blanket Pattern (10636P)
Designed by Katie Jones for Hayfield, Week 2 of the Day Tripper Picnic Blanket Crochet Along (CAL) introduces the striking Half N Half Square motif. This free, downloadable PDF pattern is written for intermediate crochet enthusiasts and forms part of a larger CAL series working toward a finished crochet blanket or throw. Each week builds on previously learned skills, and this instalment adds exciting new techniques to expand your crochet repertoire.
What Is Being Made
The project for Week 2 is the Half N Half Square, a distinctive crochet motif that blends two classic styles into one cohesive design. One half of the square features the traditional Granny triangle construction, worked in the familiar cluster-into-space method. The other half introduces bold, structured block treble crochet stripes, worked between stitches rather than into stitch tops. Together, these two halves create a visually dynamic square that balances heritage crochet aesthetics with a contemporary graphic quality.
Crafters will make 4 motifs in each colourway, producing 8 squares in total during this week of the CAL. These squares will ultimately be combined with motifs from other weeks to complete the full Day Tripper Picnic Blanket.
Construction Method
The Half N Half Square is constructed in two distinct halves that are joined together as the work progresses:
- First half: A solid-colour Granny triangle is worked first. Treble clusters are worked into the spaces between clusters, following the traditional Granny Square method of working into cluster spaces rather than individual stitch tops.
- Second half: The second half is attached as you go. In this section, treble stitches are worked between stitches — specifically into the gap between the posts of each treble stitch — rather than into the top of the stitch. This creates the bold, block-stripe effect that gives the square its name.
This join-as-you-go approach means the two halves are seamlessly connected during the crocheting process, reducing finishing time and keeping the construction neat and efficient.
Techniques Used
Week 2 introduces and reinforces several key crochet techniques:
- Granny Square / Granny Triangle construction – working treble clusters into cluster spaces, the foundation of traditional Granny Square crochet
- Treble crochet between stitches (new this week) – inserting the hook into the gap between the posts of treble stitches rather than into the top of the stitch, then completing the treble as usual; this creates a denser, more textured fabric with a bold stripe appearance
- Joining a new colour with a slip stitch (new this week) – a clean method for introducing a second colour at the correct point in the work
- Join-as-you-go construction – attaching the second half of the square while crocheting, avoiding the need for separate seaming
- Yarn end finishing – ends are sewn in using a tapestry needle, weaving back and forth through the back of the work; a tail of at least 15 cm (6 in) is recommended when changing yarns or fastening off, with a minimum of 8 cm (3 in) woven in to secure
Stitches Used
This pattern is written in UK crochet terms throughout, with US equivalents provided in brackets. The stitches and notations used include:
- Chain (ch) – the foundational stitch begun with a slip knot
- Slip stitch (ss) – used for joining and colour changes; worked by inserting the hook, yarning over, and drawing through both the stitch/space and the loop on the hook
- Double crochet (dc) – UK term; equivalent to US single crochet
