Product Description

This pattern is for a pair of ornate cable lace socks. The cable itself is a Canadian cable that is just perfect for socks, that comes to us from the creative mind of Annie Maloney. There’s enough “give” to make them comfortable, but enough unusual cabling to make them interesting to look at and fun to knit. The back and front are the same until the heel flap.

Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of knitting and purling, lace knitting and cabling).

The cable stitch is both charted and written out line by line.

This pattern is written for 2 circular needles and is written for sizes Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, and is sized by gauge.

Any lightweight sock yarn will work for this pattern.

Havre d' Grace Cabled Socks by Linda Lehman

What is Being Made

The Havre d' Grace Cabled Socks are an intermediate-level knitted sock design featuring intricate cable work. This downloadable PDF pattern from Linda Lehman creates a pair of fun and unique socks with sophisticated stitch construction. The design is available in multiple sizes ranging from Small through Extra Large, making it accessible for various foot dimensions.

Techniques Used

This sock pattern requires knitters to be comfortable with several foundational and intermediate techniques. The design incorporates cable knitting, which involves crossing stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like textures. Knitters will also work with circular needle knitting, the standard method for constructing seamless socks from the cuff down. The pattern includes the Kitchener Stitch, a grafting technique used to close the toe of the sock with an invisible seam. The pattern assumes basic knowledge of knitting, purling, and cabling techniques, making it suitable for intermediate-level crafters who have moved beyond beginner sock construction.

Stitches Used

The Havre d' Grace Cabled Socks employ a combination of fundamental knitting stitches to create visual interest and texture. The primary stitches include:

  • Knit stitch (K) – the basic foundation stitch that creates the smooth stockinette background
  • Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and definition
  • Cable stitches – the focal point of the design, created by slipping stitches and crossing them over adjacent stitches
  • Slip stitches (Sl) – used to move stitches on the needle, often worked through the back loop (Tbl) for a refined appearance

The pattern features a unique combination of a focal cable adorned with an interesting knit-purl pattern, creating visual complexity and depth throughout the sock.

Materials Required

Knitters will need the following materials to complete this project:

  • Yarn: 390 to 475 yards of lightweight fingering weight yarn in 4-ply construction. The yardage varies slightly depending on the size being knitted.
  • Needles: Two size 2.50mm circular needles for size Medium. Needle sizing adjusts by size: US #1 (2.25mm) for Small, US #2.75 or #3.00 (2.75–3.00mm) for Medium-Large or Large. An optional 12-inch needle in matching size can be used as needed to achieve proper gauge.
  • Notions: Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for executing the Kitchener Stitch closure at the toe.

Gauge and Sizing

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern. The gauge varies by size: 9 stitches per inch for Small, 8 stitches per inch for Medium, 7 stitches per inch for Medium-Large, and 6.5 stitches per inch for Large and Extra Large. All gauges are measured over stockinette stitch. Proper gauge ensures the finished socks fit correctly and display the cable pattern as intended.
