Product Description
The unusual "honeycomb" stitch pattern on this hat is made with slipped stitches and twisted stitches. The slipped stitches create a very thick and warm fabric, great for cold weather! The hat is very easy and fun to knit!
The idea for this hat came from my friend Kathy who asked me if I could design a hat in a stitch that looks like honeycomb. She even sent me the cute bee buttons for inspiration! Thank you so much, Kathy! : )
The hat is made in the round and does not require sewing.
The pattern is available in three sizes:
6-9 months: to fit a baby with head circumference of 16"-18"
2 years + : to fit a child with head circumference of 18"-20.5"
child/adult: to fit a child or an average lady with head circumference of 21"-23"
Yarn used: any thicker version of #4 medium worsted (10ply) yarn
Gauge: 4 sts per 1" in stockinette stitch
Difficulty level: easy
Hat Honeybee by Yelena Chen
What Is Being Made
The Hat Honeybee is a charming knitted baby and children's hat designed by Yelena Chen. This downloadable knitting pattern offers three finished sizes to accommodate different ages: 6-9 months (head circumference 16"-18"), 2 years and up (head circumference 18"-20.5"), and child-adult (head circumference 21"-23"). The hat features a finished height of 6.25" for the smallest size, with proportionally larger dimensions for the other sizes. The design is embellished with bee-shaped buttons, adding a playful and decorative element that makes this pattern particularly appealing for infants and young children.
Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly knitting pattern employs fundamental hat construction techniques suitable for knitters new to circular knitting. The pattern uses the magic loop or circular needle method to create a seamless, tubular fabric. The hat is worked in the round from the bottom border upward, with a transition from smaller needles for the ribbed border to larger needles for the main body. The crown shaping is accomplished using double-pointed needles, a classic technique for decreasing stitches as the hat tapers toward the top. This approach eliminates the need for seaming and creates a professional, finished appearance.
Stitches Used
The Hat Honeybee primarily features stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance on the right side. The pattern begins with a ribbed border, likely using knit and purl combinations to create an elastic edge that helps the hat stay securely on a baby's or child's head. The stockinette stitch body is worked at a gauge of 4 stitches per 1 inch, providing a fabric with good drape and structure. Decreases are incorporated at the crown to shape the hat and create the fitted top.
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for 1 skein of Lion Brand Vanna's Choice 100% acrylic yarn in Mustard or any comparable medium worsted or aran weight yarn (weight category #4, also known as 10 ply). Acrylic yarn is an excellent choice for baby garments due to its durability, washability, and affordability. The pattern requires U.S. #7 (4.5 mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches long for the ribbed border, and U.S. #9 (5.5 mm) circular needles of the same length for the main body. A set of U.S. #9 (5.5 mm) double-pointed needles (either 4 or 5 needles) is necessary for shaping the crown. Additional notions include a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and bee-shaped buttons for decoration. The pattern specifically recommends "Bee Happy" buttons by "Dress It Up," though any bee-themed buttons in an appropriate size can be substituted.
