Harmony Seamless Messy Bun Moss Stitch Beanie by Jennifer Lee
What is Being Made
The Harmony beanie is a cute 12ply ponytail beanie designed to accommodate a messy bun or ponytail while keeping the head warm. This knitted hat is available in four sizes: Age 2-5 (52cm head circumference), Age 6-10 (54cm), Teen (55cm), and Lady (56cm). The beanie features a seamless construction worked in rounds, making it a practical and stylish accessory for all ages.
Techniques Used
This beanie is worked entirely in the round using double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless fabric without side seams. The pattern notes that knitters can begin with a circular needle before switching to double-pointed needles once crown shaping begins. The seamless construction technique ensures a smooth, comfortable fit against the head, while the in-the-round method allows for even stitch distribution and consistent tension throughout the project.
Stitches Used
The Harmony beanie is worked exclusively in double moss stitch throughout the entire pattern. Double moss stitch is a textured, reversible stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific pattern. This stitch creates a dense, fabric with excellent elasticity and warmth, making it ideal for beanies. The stitch pattern remains consistent from the ribbing through to the crown shaping, creating visual and textural continuity.
Pattern Options
- Two Colour Version: Worked using Panda Magnum 12ply yarn in two contrasting colours—one ball of the first colour (C1, shown in green) and one ball of the second colour (C2, shown in red). This option allows for creative colour blocking and visual interest.
- One Colour Version: A simpler option using a single colour throughout, requiring just one 100g ball of Panda Magnum 12ply yarn.
Materials
Yarn: Panda Magnum 12ply yarn in 100g balls with a yardage of approximately 185 metres per ball. The aran weight (12ply) provides substance and warmth while remaining workable for intermediate knitters. Quantities remain consistent across all sizes at one ball per colour for the two-colour version, or one ball total for the one-colour version.
Needles: A set of 5.50mm double-pointed knitting needles (UK size 5, US size 9). A wool needle is also required for sewing in yarn ends after completion.
Difficulty and Tension
Despite being rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, the Harmony beanie uses straightforward techniques. The tension requirement is 16 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over double moss stitch using 5.50mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining the proper head circumference and ensuring the beanie fits as intended across all four sizes.
