Product Description
Amaze yourself (and your friend) with the reversible cables in Harmonia. Each side of this unisex scarf features different cables! No sorcery required.
Worked in 100% Mongolian cashmere, the design is worked from two different charts, one for Side A rows and the other for Side B rows. (But don’t be intimidated. The knitting is a little slow at first, but the reversible fabric is totally worth the effort!)
You’ll learn an interesting cabling technique while knitting this design: Two cable needles are used to turn each cable. (Again, don’t be intimidated. Remember: More. Is. Better! )
Special kits are available while supplies last on my website.
Harmonia Reversible Cables Scarf by Melissa Leapman
What Is Being Made
Harmonia is a reversible cables scarf designed by Melissa Leapman. This knitted accessory measures approximately 8 ½ inches wide by 60 inches long when blocked, making it a versatile piece suitable for various styling options. The reversible construction means both sides of the scarf feature the same attractive cable pattern, eliminating the need to hide a "wrong side."
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft. The scarf employs intermediate-level knitting skills, making it suitable for knitters who have progressed beyond basic stockinette stitch but are still developing their technical abilities. The reversible nature of the design requires careful attention to pattern work and chart reading.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Harmonia scarf features cable stitches as its primary decorative element. The pattern uses two alternating charts—Chart A and Chart B—which are worked on alternating rows. Chart A is worked on all odd-numbered rows, while Chart B is worked on all even-numbered rows. This systematic alternation creates the reversible cable fabric.
Key stitch techniques include:
- Slip stitches worked purlwise throughout the pattern
- Cable crosses created using double-pointed needles as cable needles
- Chart reading from right to left, as all symbols are read as right-side rows to maintain the reversible quality
Materials and Yarn
The scarf is worked in worsted weight yarn, specifically Jade Sapphire's Zageo 6-ply in the colorway Rose Quartz #033. The project requires 5 balls of yarn, with each ball containing 55 grams and 150 yards, providing sufficient yardage for the finished 60-inch length.
Tools and Needles
The pattern calls for size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. Additionally, the pattern specifies using 2 double-pointed knitting needles at least 2 sizes smaller than the main needles to serve as cable needles throughout the project. A stitch marker is also required to track pattern repeats.
Gauge and Construction
The pattern specifies a gauge of 36 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches when blocked. Checking gauge before beginning is emphasized as important for achieving the correct finished measurements. The scarf begins with a cast-on of 78 stitches, which are then worked following the alternating chart pattern across all stitches.
