HappyDays Cardigan by oceanandyarn

What is Being Made

The HappyDays is a lightweight cardigan designed as a versatile everyday companion piece. Despite its delicate construction, the garment offers a cozy, wearable quality that makes it suitable for regular wear across multiple seasons. The cardigan is available in two size ranges: S/M and L/XL, allowing for customization based on individual fit preferences.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is an advanced-level knitting project created using the knitting craft. The design employs sophisticated construction methods that require experienced knitting skills and understanding of complex stitch patterns and shaping techniques.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The cardigan features patent stitch as its primary stitch pattern. Patent stitch creates a textured, dimensional fabric with excellent elasticity and visual interest. The pattern includes specific edge treatment where the first stitch of each row is knitted through the front loop and the last stitch is purled, creating neat selvage edges that are ideal for seaming or picking up stitches for button bands and other finishing details.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The HappyDays cardigan uses a lace-weight yarn construction created by knitting with two strands held together. The primary yarn is Merino Single Lace by Cowgirl Blues, a 100% pure wool yarn with a yardage of 600 meters per 100 grams. The second yarn is Küstengarn "Leichte Brise" (Coastal Yarn "Light Breeze"), a luxurious blend of 72% mohair and 28% silk with 210 meters per 25 grams.

Yarn quantities required are as follows:

  • Size S/M: 175 grams total (combining both yarns)
  • Size L/XL: 200 grams total (combining both yarns)

The two-strand construction creates a fabric with enhanced drape and a subtle sheen from the silk and mohair blend while maintaining the breathability and warmth of merino wool.

Needles and accessories required include:

  • Circular needles in 5mm size, 100 centimeters long for working the body and larger sections
  • Needle set (double-pointed needles or needle tips) in 5mm size for smaller circumferences, such as sleeves or ribbing
  • Needle cables or yarn threads for placing stitches on hold during construction
  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases
  • Auxiliary needle for cable work or stitch manipulation if required by the pattern
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches by 38 rows equals 10 by 10 centimeters when worked in patent stitch. This gauge measurement should be taken after washing and blocking the swatch, as the final dimensions and drape of the cardigan depend on proper finishing. Variations in gauge will directly affect both the finished size of the garment and the total yardage requirements, making accurate gauge swatching essential for successful completion.

Pattern Notes

The pattern includes guidance for a provisional cast-on method, with reference materials provided for knitters unfamiliar with this technique. This cast-on method allows for later pick-up of live stitches, which is useful for creating seamless transitions or adding elements like button bands after the main body is complete.
