Hanna Cardigan – Knitting Pattern for Women by Debbie Bliss
The Hanna Cardigan is a women's knitted cardigan and jacket pattern designed by Debbie Bliss, worked in the luxurious Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky yarn. This is a seamed construction pattern available as a downloadable PDF, making it a satisfying project for intermediate knitters who want to build their skills in cabled texture and garment shaping. The finished piece is a structured, cosy cardigan-jacket with cable panel detailing, suitable for cooler seasons and everyday wear.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces a women's cardigan-style jacket knitted in the round and flat sections, then seamed together for a neat, tailored finish. It is available in seven sizes, fitting chest measurements from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) up to 142–147 cm (56–58 in), with generous positive ease built into the finished measurements. Finished chest measurements range from 109 cm (43 in) to 165 cm (65 in), and the garment length ranges from approximately 52 cm (20½ in) to 63 cm (24¾ in) depending on size. The sleeve length is a consistent 45 cm (17¾ in) across all sizes, giving the cardigan a comfortable, relaxed silhouette.
Techniques Used
- Seamed construction – the garment pieces (body panels and sleeves) are knitted separately and then joined using seaming techniques, giving the finished cardigan clean edges and a structured shape typical of classic knitwear.
- Cable knitting – the pattern features both C6B (cable 6 back) and C6F (cable 6 front) cable crossings, which create the characteristic twisted rope or braid effect seen in traditional Aran and cable knitwear. A cable needle is used to hold stitches temporarily while the crossing is worked.
- Increases – the kfb (knit into the front and back of a stitch) technique is used for shaping, adding stitches neatly within the fabric.
- Marker placement – stitch markers (pm – place marker) are used to keep track of pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the knitting.
- Stocking stitch – the main fabric is worked in stocking stitch (knit on right side rows, purl on wrong side rows), which forms the smooth, classic background against which the cable panels stand out in relief.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (st st) – the primary background stitch throughout the garment body and sleeves.
- Knit (k) and purl (p) – the fundamental stitches forming both the stocking stitch fabric and the cable panels.
- C6B – slip next 3 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit 3, then knit 3 from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the right.
- C6F – slip next 3 stitches onto a cable needle and hold to the front of the work, knit 3, then knit from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the left.
- Kfb (knit into front and back) – a simple increase stitch used in shaping sections.
Materials – Yarn and Needles
The Hanna Cardigan is designed specifically for Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky, a premium chunky weight yarn that blends the softness of cashmere with the durability and warmth of merino wool and microfibre. This yarn weight gives the cardigan its cosy, substantial drape while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable everyday wear. The recommended needle size is 6 mm (US 10) knitting needles, and a cable needle is also required for working the C6B and C6F cable crossings.
