Product Description

Halft is a simple shawlette worked from side to side, designed to use up most of your skein. Weigh it at the start and increase until you’re halfway through, then decrease. Halft is the Icelandic word for half.

Finished Size: 17x66” once blocked

Yarn: Snallygaster Fibers Polaris Sock, 75% Superwash Merino/25% Nylon, 460 yards/100g. Sample knit in Aragorn.

Needles: 24” circular needle size 5 US (3.75 mm), or size to obtain gauge

Gauge: 18 stitches/ 28 rows per 4 inches in wet-blocked stockinette. Gauge is not critical for this item, but it will affect drape and amount of yarn used.

Notes:

This shawl is knit from one end to the other. Weigh your yarn at the beginning, knit the increase portion of the shawl until you have used half (or just a little slightly less) of the yarn, then begin decrease portion. For this purpose, a scale which measures grams is best. Sample used 95 grams. You may knit this shawl with any yarn, at any gauge. The secret remains, just weigh it!

Halft Shawlette by Corrine Walcher

What is Being Made

Halft is a side-to-side knitted shawlette designed as a practical, yarn-efficient project that maximizes the use of a single skein. The finished piece measures 17 inches by 66 inches once blocked, creating an elegant, elongated wrap suitable for layering or draping. The design takes its name from the Icelandic word "halft," which means half—a reference to the pattern's core construction method of knitting to the midpoint of your yarn weight, then reversing the shaping.

Techniques Used

Halft employs a straightforward side-to-side construction method that begins at one end of the shawlette and progresses to the other. The pattern uses a weigh-and-work approach: knitters weigh their yarn at the start and knit the increase portion until approximately half the yarn has been consumed, then transition to a mirror-image decrease portion to complete the piece. This intuitive technique eliminates the need for precise stitch counts in certain sections and allows flexibility based on actual yarn weight rather than rigid pattern instructions. The shawl is worked in wet-blocked stockinette stitch, which requires blocking to achieve the finished dimensions and proper drape.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows. The pattern incorporates increases during the first half of the project to expand the shawlette's width progressively, followed by decreases in the second half to taper the piece back to its original width. This symmetrical increase-then-decrease approach creates the characteristic shawlette silhouette while maintaining visual balance.

Materials and Tools

The sample shawlette was knit using Snallygaster Fibers Polaris Sock yarn, a 3-ply to 4-ply weight blend composed of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon, offering durability and easy care. The yarn provides 460 yards per 100 grams. The sample was worked in the colorway Aragorn. Knitters will need a 24-inch circular needle in US size 5 (3.75 mm), or a needle size adjusted to obtain the recommended gauge. A scale measuring in grams is essential for the weigh-and-work method, allowing knitters to track yarn consumption accurately throughout the project.

Gauge and Customization

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches in wet-blocked stockinette stitch. While gauge is noted as not critical for this item, variations in gauge will affect both the drape of the finished shawlette and the total amount of yarn consumed during knitting. Knitters working at a tighter gauge will use yarn more quickly, while those working at a looser gauge will use yarn more slowly, making this pattern adaptable to different yarn weights and needle preferences within reason.
