Product Description
The Halfpenny Baby Blanket is a "quilt like" Tunisian crochet project created by using stitches that mimic fabrics. While the squares appear to be stitched separately and joined, the blanket is constructed with 4 panels of 5 continuous blocks each. I love the efficiency of fewer tails and carrying yarn up the sides. The panels are easily joined and finished with a simple crochet border. Halfpenny was recently pictured in the Tunisian supplement of Simply Crochet, Issue 94 along with some of my other favourite designs. This project is suitable for "competent" beginners and includes detailed instructions on each stitch pattern used and suggestions on how to design your own project.
Halfpenny Baby Blanket by Sandy Walker
Project Overview
The Halfpenny Baby Blanket is the fourth design in "heART" from The Penny Collection, created by designer Sandy Walker. This intermediate-level crochet project produces a finished blanket measuring 40 inches by 40 inches (100 cm x 100 cm), making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw. The design showcases Tunisian crochet techniques combined with traditional crochet finishing methods.
Construction Method and Techniques
This blanket employs a structured panel-based construction approach. The design consists of 4 panels, each containing 5 continuous blocks that are separated by crochet borders. Once all blocks are completed within their respective panels, the panels are joined together and finished with a narrow crochet border around the outside perimeter. This modular construction method allows crafters to work on manageable sections before assembling the final piece.
The primary technique used throughout this project is Tunisian crochet, which combines elements of traditional crochet and knitting. Tunisian crochet creates a denser, more fabric-like texture compared to standard crochet, making it particularly suitable for blankets that require structure and warmth. The pattern requires a good foundational knowledge of Tunisian stitches to successfully complete this intermediate-difficulty project.
Stitches and Crochet Methods
While the PDF content references the use of Tunisian stitches as the primary stitch family, the specific Tunisian stitch variations used within the blocks are detailed in the full pattern instructions. The borders joining the blocks and the outer finishing border utilize standard crochet techniques, creating a contrast between the Tunisian-worked panels and the traditional crochet edging. This combination of techniques adds visual interest and structural definition to the completed blanket.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Halfpenny Baby Blanket requires a total of 1980 yards (1815 metres) of sport weight yarn, also referred to as #3 weight yarn. The yardage is distributed across four colors as follows:
- Colour A (Main Colour): 1000 yards (920 metres) — used in every block throughout the design
- Colour B: 360 yards (330 metres)
- Colour C: 360 yards (330 metres)
- Colour D: 260 yards (235 metres)
The blanket pictured in the pattern was created using Bernat Baby Sport yarn. The designer suggests using a minimum of 3 colours for visual variety and encourages crafters to incorporate a "stashbuster" colour, making this an excellent project for utilizing leftover yarn from previous projects.
Tools and Equipment
Completing this project requires specific crochet hooks and accessories:
- Tunisian Crochet Hook: Size J/9/6 mm, measuring at least 12 inches (30 cm) in length. The extended length is necessary to accommodate the multiple stitches required for Tunisian crochet rows.
- Standard Crochet Hook: Size H/8/5 mm for working the crochet borders and joining sections
- Additional Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, scissors, and stitch markers for tracking progress and maintaining pattern accuracy
Skill Level and Pattern Details
This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have moved beyond basic stitches and are comfortable working with more complex stitch patterns and multi-panel construction. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and requires familiarity with Tunisian crochet techniques before beginning. The modular panel construction provides a structured approach to managing a larger project, allowing crafters to complete and join sections progressively.
