Grant Socks by All Knit Up Designs

What is Being Made

Grant Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by All Knit Up Designs. This intermediate-level sock pattern is available in five sizes ranging from extra small (XS) through extra large (XL), accommodating a wide range of foot sizes. The pattern uses a modified construction technique and is suitable for knitters with some experience in sock construction.

Techniques Used

The Grant Socks pattern employs several fundamental sock knitting techniques. The pattern features a Modified Eye of Partridge Heel Flap, which creates a durable and textured heel section designed to withstand wear. A Wedge Toe construction is used for the toe shaping, allowing for a gradual decrease that creates a comfortable fit. The pattern accommodates multiple sock knitting methods, giving knitters flexibility in their approach: knitters may choose to work using double-pointed needles (DPNs), Magic Loop method, 9-inch circular needles, or two circular needles, depending on their preference and experience level.

The pattern includes Kitchener stitch for grafting, a technique used to seamlessly close the toe. Knitters will need a darning needle for weaving in ends and closing the sock.

Stitches Used

Grant Socks utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for sock construction:

  • Knit (K) – the basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
  • Purl (P) – used for textural variation and pattern details
  • Knit two together (K2Tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Purl two together (P2Tog) – a decrease worked on purl rows
  • Slip, slip, knit (SSK) – a left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit and purl rows

The pattern also incorporates stitch markers (two different types designated as Marker A and Marker B) to track pattern repeats and construction sections. Directional stitching instructions are included, using abbreviations such as KW (knitwise), PW (purlwise), WYIB (with yarn in back), and WYIF (with yarn in front) to ensure proper stitch orientation and tension.

Materials

The Grant Socks pattern calls for 400 yards (366 meters) of fingering weight yarn. The recommended yarn is The Great Skein Merino Twist Sock, a 400-yard, 100-gram skein composed of 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon. This fiber blend provides durability, softness, and easy care—the superwash treatment allows for machine washing, while the nylon content adds strength to high-wear areas.

Needles required are US 1.5 (2.5mm), sized to achieve the specified gauge. As noted, knitters have flexibility in needle style and may use their preferred sock knitting method.

Gauge

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 18 stitches by 24 rows over 2 inches (5 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished socks fit correctly across the five available sizes.

Sizes

Grant Socks is offered in five sizes based on cast-on stitch counts: 56 stitches (XS), 60 stitches (S), 64 stitches (M), 68 stitches (L), and 72 stitches (XL).
