Gradation Fingerless Mitts by Corrine Walcher
What Is Being Made
The Gradation Fingerless Mitts are a pair of wrist-length fingerless gloves designed to showcase the beautiful color gradation of gradient yarn. These mitts feature an open hand design, making them ideal for activities requiring finger dexterity while keeping the wrists and lower hands warm. The finished mitts measure 5 inches unstretched around the cuff and hand, stretching up to 9 inches for comfortable wear.
Design and Construction
Created by designer Corrine Walcher, these fingerless mitts are engineered to highlight the subtle and effortless color changes in gradient yarn without overwhelming the delicate color transitions. The design intentionally keeps construction simple so that the yarn's natural gradation becomes the focal point. The mitts are worked in the round using either double-pointed needles or a circular needle, creating seamless construction that contributes to the polished finished appearance.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Gradation Fingerless Mitts employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern utilizes color changes to transition between different shades of the gradient yarn, with each color section worked for 5 rounds before breaking the yarn and introducing the next shade. This color-blocking approach creates distinct horizontal stripes that follow the natural progression of the gradient.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Ribbed Cuff: The mitts begin with a 1x1 ribbed pattern (alternating knit and purl stitches) worked for 5 rounds in each color section, creating an elastic, fitted cuff that hugs the wrist
- Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches for the ribbed texture
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping the mitts
- Knit Front and Back (KFB): An increase stitch used to add stitches where needed for proper fit
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary fabric stitch worked in the round, creating a smooth, classic knit surface that allows the yarn gradient to display prominently
Yarn and Materials
The Gradation Fingerless Mitts are designed specifically for Neighborhood Fiber Company's Studio DK Gradient yarn set. This yarn is 100% Superwash Merino, offering softness, breathability, and easy care. The gradient set provides 720 yards of yarn across 10.6 ounces, with enough yardage for multiple projects. The sample mitts shown were knit in the Shades of Lapis colorway and used approximately 140 yards, leaving substantial yardage for additional projects.
The pattern accommodates DK weight, sport weight, and 4-ply yarn, making it adaptable to various gradient yarn options. The superwash treatment of the Merino fiber ensures these mitts can be easily laundered without felting, making them practical for regular wear.
Needles and Gauge
The mitts are worked on US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles, using either a set of 5 double-pointed needles or a 16-inch circular needle for in-the-round construction. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches in blocked stockinette stitch, worked in the round. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished size and ensuring the mitts fit comfortably on the wrist and hand.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Gradation Fingerless Mitts require competency with basic knitting techniques including casting on, working in the round, managing multiple colors, and executing simple increases and decreases. The straightforward construction and repetitive stitch patterns make this an accessible intermediate project that allows knitters to focus on the visual impact of the gradient yarn rather than complex stitch work.
