What is Being Made
The Goose Potholder is a tapestry crochet project designed by RaffamusaDesigns that creates a finished potholder measuring 6.7 inches (17 cm) by 7.3 inches (18.5 cm). This functional kitchen textile features a decorative goose design worked in contrasting colors using the tapestry crochet technique, making it both practical for handling hot cookware and visually appealing as a kitchen accessory.
Techniques Used
This project employs tapestry crochet as its primary technique. Tapestry crochet is a color-work method that allows crocheters to create intricate patterns and images by carrying unused yarn inside the stitches as they work, eliminating the need for frequent color changes or weaving in multiple ends. The pattern is structured in two distinct sections: the main potholder body is worked in rows, followed by a border that is worked in rounds, providing both visual interest and a finished edge.
Stitches Used
The Goose Potholder is worked entirely in single crochet (sc), which is the fundamental stitch for tapestry crochet work. Single crochet creates a dense, sturdy fabric ideal for potholders, as it provides structure and stability when handling hot items. The pattern uses straightforward single crochet instructions throughout both the main body and border sections, making it accessible to intermediate-level crocheters.
Materials
- Yarn: DK weight (3, Light) cotton yarn in two contrasting colors. The designer used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK, specifically Deep Sea Blue (468) requiring 50-55 yards (45-50 meters) for color A, and Champ. White (403) requiring 30-35 yards (27-32 meters) for color B.
- Hook: 3.0-mm crochet hook (size 11 UK)
- Additional Notions: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 single crochet stitches over 26 rows in a 4-inch (10 cm) square when worked in single crochet tapestry crochet. Achieving the correct gauge is important for obtaining the intended finished dimensions of the potholder.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While single crochet is a basic stitch, the tapestry crochet technique requires familiarity with carrying yarn and managing color changes within rows, making it suitable for crocheters who have moved beyond beginner projects but may be newer to color-work methods.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized into two main sections. The primary section covers the potholder body, which is constructed by working in rows using the tapestry crochet method to build the goose design. The second section details the border, which is worked in rounds to frame and finish the edges of the completed potholder. Pattern instructions use standard crochet abbreviations and notation, with color specifications clearly indicated (for example, "(A) 5" means to work five single crochet stitches using color A).
