Summer Breeze and Golden Summer
Inspired by the middle of the year and the transition into and out of the summer season, these two distinctly different styles of shawl capture my favourite times of year. From the sweet frothy blossoms bursting out in spring to the last rays of golden light from the setting sun in the autumn, a few changes to the design create a look as difference as the two book ends of summer.

Golden Summer Breeze Crochet Shawl by Sandra Paul
What is Being Made
The Golden Summer Breeze is a trapezium-shaped crochet shawl designed by Sandra Paul and published by Cherry Heart. This shawl is part of a two-style collection inspired by the transition into and out of the summer season. The Golden Summer Breeze represents one interpretation of seasonal inspiration, capturing the essence of summer's golden light and warmth through thoughtful design choices and construction methods.
Design and Construction
The shawl features a distinctive trapezium silhouette with an open lace design as its central focal point. The construction method involves working the main body of the shawl in rows from the bottom upward, followed by the addition of decorative borders worked in the round. This two-stage construction approach allows crafters to build the shawl's structure systematically before completing the finished edges.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Golden Summer Breeze employs open lace crochet techniques throughout its design. The open lace pattern creates an airy, breathable fabric that is characteristic of summer garments. By working in rows for the body and transitioning to in-the-round construction for the borders, this pattern demonstrates intermediate-level crochet skills and familiarity with directional stitch work.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, which provides an appropriately delicate gauge for the open lace design. The designer's choice of yarn fiber is integral to the shawl's aesthetic and functionality—cotton yarn is specifically selected for its light-reflecting properties that enhance the stitch definition and its cooling characteristics suitable for warm-weather wear.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Golden Summer Breeze is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with lace patterns and manage shaping through row-by-row construction and circular border work.
